Hearing set on Britain Iraq memo

CAPITOL HILL The so-called Downing Street Memo is getting a public hearing on Capitol Hill today.

The memo reportedly sent to Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair three years ago said U-S intelligence was "being fixed" to back up President Bush's desire to overthrow Saddam Hussein. It was made public by a British newspaper more than six weeks ago and has been getting a flurry of media attention in Europe. Today's Washington meeting is the first public session on it in the U-S.

Michigan Democrat John Conyers, hosting today's forum, says the administration's credibility gap on the war is "growing larger and larger." Conyers is urging Republicans to join the inquiry but apparently only Democrats plan to be there today.

Last week, during a White House news conference with Prime Minister Blair, Bush flatly denied any allegations that intelligence on the war was somehow manipulated.

1. CNN was running a big MEMOGATE teaser this morning

and vid of Bush and Blair. Gave the distinct impression it was going to be big news. But then, American Morning opened with a school hostage story in Cambodia and Aruba-girl. Still no word about the DSM, though. That was an hour and fifteen minutes ago.

I guess that is what the call "Headline News." Literally.
