Anyone hear Tim Wirth on C-Span's Wa Journal this a.m. about UN? |
|
He's head of the UN Foundation which is funded by Ted Turner. Did I hear him correctly saying Bolton would be a good pick for the Ambassador? And what about his praise for a book that Gingrich wrote with Mitchell about UN reform?
I didn't hear the whole interview, but was bothered by what I heard...anyone have more info..what did you think?
Now they've got a RWinger from Indiana on Mike Spence who's trashing the UN so I guess Wirth and Spence are on this morning to pressure Senators to hang in to vote for Bolton? Not good news.
Spence sounds like one of those freaky RW'ers talking about "Tough Love" for the UN. He didn't even answer a caller saying why aren't we investigating 9/11,the missing money and instead are using the UN as a whipping boy for our own failures.
But, where do he and Wirth differ except on whether money should be witheld or not.

3. "Internal accountability & transparency" OMG |
|
Pence is calling for that regarding the UN??? Maybe we should all call on him and let him know that we demand that of this administration first.
For the Christians: "Let he without sin throw the first stone."
hmmm Pense is concerned about he almost 10 billion skimmed in Oil for Food program by Sadaam? How about the 9 billion missing under Bremer and CPA?

Sheesh. Pence, BTW, was one of the Clinton inquisitors. He's a vile piece of shit who is wants to put the UN on a boat and send it to Botswana and then send thousands of troops to the Mexican border. He's one of the right wing's "glamor boys".
Wirth has had a great record on women's rights and the environment. His points were the UN needs reform, but more in an institutional manner than a political one. This has long been a standing of many who know that institution well and one reason Clinton pushed Anan for the job and blocked the previous secretary general (Eygptian with the same first and last name...brain cramp) from getting another term.
Wirth made a great point when he mentioned the stupid House bill addressing military issues as if the UN has its own in-house army and it can make changes immediately. Wirth properly pointed that it's a conglomeration of different countries under different commands (didn't these monkeys love watching Black Hawk Down???). Also, it's gonna be these blue hats that are gonna have to bail our asses out of Iraq.
Sheesh.

5. Thanks for the extra information on Wirth since I missed some of it. |
|
I just hope he's not pushing for Bolton, who would be a disaster.

6. I Don't Think He Was Pushing For Bolton... |
|
Just get the thing done and over with. Right now there's a lot disgust in the UN about this thing and what it'll mean.
Bolton would be a disaster for the UN...and ya know, that might not be a bad thing. Not to be too flippant, but this regime has alienated itself enough with the UN, why not go the full distance.
Bolton can't ramrod things through the General Assembly like DeLay does in the House. Plus, this in-your-face attitude about the UN should come to a head. Albeit, this place isn't perfect, but it's better than nothing at all. This regime has to know that it's ultimate exit out of Iraq...politically at least...has to go through the UN. IMHO, they're trying to force the issue with Bolton in there...ain't gonna work.
I did love the caller. I hope it was a DUer...who mentioned how the wingnuts make such a stink on this oil-for-food crap...which is pennies compared to the amount that's been looted since March, 2003. I especially love the comment that Chenney now draws a bigger check from his Haliburton stock than his government paycheck. How telling.
Cheers!
