Sisters and Brothers: Help old King out. And do yourself a favor, too.

Last night during my usual bout of flipping, I came across Jack Van Impe and Rexella. It was, I thought, and extremely amusing religious show. They were hawking a DVD titled “Beyond the Grave”. Rexella looked like she knew what she was talking about. She has this horrible makeup job of three bottles of Clearasil. And Jack can quote scripture quicker than Hogan’s goat. I thought it was a hoot and vowed to watch again. This morning I googled “Jack Van Impe” and found this Web site, http://www.catalaw.com/detox/reverse/14.shtml, along with ones that suggested he was a real religious goofball, but I find that I can believe either one. Is he for real or is he a satirical parody? I heartily recommend his show for laughs either way.

1. My husband use to watch him when I was not around.
He couldn't take me giggling and yelling back at Jack and Rexella. My daughter came in one time and couldn't stop laughing at Rexella's name. I mean, how much closer to Godzilla can you get? Anyway, he is for real. That "the world is coming to an end" type of preaching has always been popular. Sort of like tabloids for Christians.

4. When I was a kid in the 60s, I'd nap after school and listen to AM

radio overnight. One of my favorite things was this amazing satirist who really reamed the Baptists. Gawd he was funny, funniest thing I'd ever heard, much funnier than Mad Magazine! He'd speak in tongues and interrupt himself every few minutes to tell listeners they could get into heaven for only a $3.95 donation, and that they'd get his book, too! Such a DEAL!

Imagine my astonishment when I found out he was not only utterly sincere, but that he had believers all over the south who sent him that $3.95 and were convinced they were going to heaven for that. His name was Garner Ted Armstrong.

Sometimes the line between reality and satire is a very, very fine one.
