MUMBAI: In an unprecedented move, the US vice-consul in Mumbai, William Klein, drove down to the Jamia Quadria Ashrafiya madarssa, situated on the congested Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, on Wednesday afternoon to brief the ulemas about Koran abuse incidents at the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Perspiring in his thick suit, Klein sat cross-legged on a cotton mattress on the first floor of the ancient madarssa and assured the ulemas that stringent action, under the US laws, would be taken against the guilty.

The US official, who appeared uncomfortable in the small room, insisted that the Bush administration respected all religions and is determined to bring the guilty to book. Maulana Syed Moin Ashraf, who led the ulemas along with Mohammed Saeed Noori of the Raza Academy, demanded a globally televised apology by Bush to the Muslims of the world. He warned that Muslims will not tolerate any insult to their holy book.

Though Klein offered to hold a second round of discussion, Maulana Noori rejected the idea saying no further talks were possible as long as action was not taken against the guilty. It is learnt that Klein initially wanted the meeting to be held at the Taj, but the maulanas insisted on his coming to the madarssa.
