Even the local newspaper, the LaPorte Herald Argus, refused to talk about Ake on NBC5's cameras.

Local pastors have told their congregations not to talk to reporters. But some local citizens want to know what's going on.

"(I) hope he just comes back. But all of a sudden, they put his house up for sale," resident Charles Allen said. "That's really buffaloed everybody."

When Ake's wife dropped out of sight shortly after his disappearance in Iraq, speculation swirled.

"I know some guy told me at the restaurant she was from Russia and had to go back to Russia," a woman said.

A few signs stand as silent reminders to Ake's continued absence from the community, but the ribbons are fading.

Ten days ago, after not writing any stories about the kidnapping for weeks, the Herald-Argus published an account of rumors flying around LaPorte that Ake was actually free and safe in Iraq.

what happened to him. Did we pay ransom? Did the family? Been wondering why FBI can be in Aruba searching for the lady but aren't in Iraq searcing for Pvt (Sgt) Maupin and Ake and if I'm not mistaken, there is one more. I hope they are all safe but if bush has allowed negotiating for Ake and not the others, we should be very angry. Maybe the family did it. Does anyone know. Where is Pvt.(Sgt) Maupin, mr. bush?
