Any advice for a young person looking to work in politics? |
|
Hi Im entering my junior year in college. I've been heavily involved in Democratic politics since I was about 15. I've volunteered for numerous campaigns and consider myself very acitive in the political scene. I had planned to go into law, but what Im starting to discover is that politics is my hobby and is really the only thing Im interested in. Ive flirted with the idea of running for office in the future but corruption in both parties has started to turn me off from that. Ive recently become interested in working in politics, perhaps as a political consultant working with both issues and candidates. Im looking at two graduate programs right now, George Washington's School of Politcal Management, which seems to be a very powerful and popular program, and the University of Florida's Political Campaign School, which is where Im going for undergrad currently. Is there any advice that anyone has for someone wanting to work in politics? Any books to read? Im currently reading Raymond Strother's Falling Up and also read the Carville/Matalin book about the 1992 Campaign, Alls Fair. I just figure that since Im such a political nerd that I might as well do something that I enjoy immensely with my life.
Thoughts?
Thanks for your time, Bryan

3. Contact your state/federal representatives' offices. |
|
See if they have openings for interns/staffers/etc. Great way to get your foot in the door.

4. See if the precinct rep. spot is vacant ... |
|
... and try to get appointed if it is. Contact your Democratic ward, city or county committee.
