I was on the radio for the first time today.
I was listening to this station, 97.9, it's an "urban" station...mostly rap, R&B and they have a nationally syndicated show in the morning (the Rickey Smiley show, I think?). Anyway they were talking about the girl missing in Aruba and how an African-American woman from South Carolina went missing there LAST summer but there wasn't ever any mention of her in the media and they were questioning that.

So I called in and agreed with them, etc etc. I mentioned the missing gay man (who has now been found dead, I believe) who wasn't in the media, either.

But the interesting part was when I got off the phone. It was on tape delay so I got to listen to it a few minutes later. I got off, they were talking about my comments and one of the DJs said "And _____ was white, too."

Now, how did they know I was white?

Before you say it was how I speak, I had a friend years ago who was an African-American woman and people could never tell us apart on the phone (we worked at the same place).

So how did they know I wasn't African-American? I just thought that was interesting. They WERE right, but I still wondered. I mean, they never asked me or anything.
