At U.N., Bush Is Cast in the Unfamiliar Role of Playing Defense
By Dana Milbank
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 23, 2003; Page A18

When President Bush addresses world leaders at the United Nations today, he will be in an unfamiliar position: on the defensive.

His administration, after deciding a month ago to seek U.N. help in getting more foreign troops and funds for Iraq, quickly concluded that it would not be possible to get the help it needed on the terms it wanted. Thus, instead of hailing a new agreement to cooperate, Bush will defend his actions in Iraq.

---snip---- this sums it all up.....

At the very least, Bush's efforts to seek U.N. assistance will help the president blunt Democratic criticism of him for avoiding the world body. But that will not get him on the offensive. The problem, said a Senate GOP aide, is "there are no actions available to bolster his rhetoric. There's no leverage."

1. I think
The U.N in general know all they need to know about Bush.

I don't think Bush knows anything about humility or good grace. He'll step up and try to bully them again. He doesn't seem to realise that no one gives a flying fuck about him or his neo con buddies. It's about the only place in the world where he'll be made to feel little. It happened to Powell and now I hope it happens to Bush.

2. There are many in the UN
who see the Iraq fiasco as the beginning of the end for the US, and expect some kind of meltdown, ala the former Soviet Union. Should be interesting to hear the speech. Wonder if it will get applause or boos or just stoney silence?

3. I'm sure when the rep. from Cameroon moves slighty to scratch his ass ...
Bush and the corporate media whores will point to that as a standing ovation :eyes:
