House Panel Cuts Education, Public Broadcasting

WASHINGTON -- A federal funding bill approved by a House committee calls for belt-tightening in education and on "Sesame Street."

Almost 50 federally funded programs would be eliminated and many others would be slashed, including No Child Left Behind. The cuts total $2.3 billion.

National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are also on the hit list. The House Appropriations committee would cut federal funding for public broadcasting by 25 percent.

If your not outraged your not paying attention.

2. Rot the infrastructure. When it collapses who'll get the blame?
Not Clinton, though FWIW they'll probably try that too.

If * won't even fund his own educational programs, even the republicans who voted for * have to feel outraged.

3. There has been various calls for action posted on DU last week

and this week, but they have regularly sunk between the Dean threads and the DSM threads.

One among others, if people want to do something else than whine. The other one came from Moveon.

5. "leave no child behind" from military recruiters...
I think that's what they really mean...LNCB requires schools to provide names and addresses to recruiters.

7. No offense, but in comparison to most of the industrialized world,

The USA IS stupid. AND WRONG, to boot.

The ReThuglican Party and their RW pundit friends in the Corporate Media are making sure the rest of the world knows it through their disinformation strategies. They continually deceive the American Public by painting every international peacekeeping and lawmaking body as hopelessly corrupt and ineffective while their own despicable international aggression goes UNINVESTIGATED.

9. This is just the latest move in the ongoing quest to dumb down America
The American public has been systemactically dumbed down for the past seventy years, at least. It really amazes me what is passing for a high school education these days, just as it amazed my parents what was passing for a HS education thirty years ago when I attended. Reading has been on the decline forever, and what passes for American culture is just recycled pabulum.

An uneducated public is an easily controlled public. That is why we have the richest country in the world populated with some of most uneducated people in the industrialized world. If you want a real education in this country, you have to pursue it independently, searching long and hard for it.

It is a very sorry statement on the direction our society is heading.
