Part of the plan...keep 'em poor...they'll join the army
While there is no draft in the 1960s sense of the draft..there is an economic draft of working-class men and women who see no other alternative than joining the army. They come from towns where it's either get a fast food job or work in some other service sector job for little or no money.

If you are working-class and you want to go to college the military sounds really good. No student loans and money to pay for tuition.

Again, which class is making the sacrifices? Not Bush's yacht buddies that is for sure.

Soft Economy Aids Army Recruiting Effort
By ERIC SCHMITT

FORT KNOX, Ky., Sept. 16 — The slumping American economy has proved to be a boon to the Army's efforts to recruit the 100,000 enlisted soldiers it says it needs this year to fill its active-duty and reserve ranks, senior Army officials say, so far relieving concerns that the turmoil in Iraq could crimp new enlistments.

All the armed services say they will meet or exceed their recruiting goals for the fiscal year ending on Sept. 30.

1. I don't think most of the voting classes will have a problem with that

As the middle class is phased out and the gap between rich and poor widens, the underclass swells, and Crusades and natural resource seizure operations comprise a socially acceptable way to reduce the surplus until euthanasia of the poor gains wider popularity, which may take as much as a decade.

2. There should be universal service like in Europe
If we go to war, we should all share the burden. It's a lot easier to send other people's kids off to war. I support two years of mandatory national service with only the most strict deferments. Reduces racism and deters war.

3. AMEN! gsh999!
I think two years of MANDATORY service for ALL with NO exemptions except for serious disabilities would create more cohesiveness within the US.

As it is now people tend to associate only with those from the same class/race as themselves. At least if people were required to joing the service for two years they would be forced to associate with people outside their socio-economic group, maybe both sides would learn something.
