How to post pictures on DU.
Posting pics on DU is simple once you understand how to go about it. You cannot directly upload your picture to DU, but you can insert a valid URL that is a link to your picture. Think of it as a reference to somewhere, much as a card catalog in the library. The card in the catalog is the reference (URL) to the book (picture.)

OK, so how do you get the reference? You need to have a ‘somewhere’ that creates references to your pics. There are a number of sites that offer free picture hosting. I use http://photobucket.com/ . Click on “-Sign up for free –“ and follow the yellow brick road. Since everyone can view the link to your picture, I prefer to use my DU name for my login name.

Once you login, you submit pictures to photobucket, When your pictures are in photobucket, you can paste the generated URL into your DU post.

Here’s an example:

Right click on the picture & select “Copy link location.” When you do that you are grabbing the reference to this pic. The reference (URL) is now in your Windoze clipboard. Start a reply to this thread, put your cursor in the Message box & paste (Ctrl-V) the reference in your clipboard into your message. When preview your reply, the picture appears. Please cancel this test post, as we don’t need a thread with multiple posts of the same picture.

Hope this helps.

FYI, I’ve been using photobucket for a few months, and have not noticed any increased spam in my email account.

1. What a great picture!
And good for you, unhappy, for providing this information.

FYI, photobucket will suspend your account if you exceed a certain space - I forget what it is, exactly - but you can always just open a new account and be more judicious with how much you plant there.

Oh, that Cambridge photo is just wonderful. Thank you for everything.

2. My pleasure. BTW, the monthly bandwidth allocation for each free account
is 1,500MB per month. A $25.00 check will get you unlimited bandwidth for a year. If you use a lot of pictures in your posts, $25.00 is small price to pay.

Can you delete pics on photobucket to save bandwidth?...so you don't go over the allotted bandwith?

9. Bandwidth is consumed when folks look at your picture.
Lots of posts with pics = lotsa bandwidth as folks look at your pics.

Space is not the same as bandwidth. Your pics use space on photobucket. Think of putting books (pictures) in a bookcase (photobucket.) photobucket gives you 25MB of free space. If your pictures are around 100KB, you can store about 250 pictures.

17. Important way to save bandwidth
From a great DU post at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=111x43471

Basically, you insert .nyud.net:8090 immediately after the .com (or .org, etc.) part of the URL. The network then fecthes one copy of your picture, and caches it in various computers round the world. Your bacnwidth is then not used. This is completly free to use.

You have to give it a few minutes to do the caching - at first it will tell you the address is not found.

18. Good point. Perhaps I should rewrite this subject
to include the caching tip & the other posts I made to clarify 'stuff.' My original post was to tell folks how post pictures. I didn't want to get into too much detail, but the devil is in the details.

Looks like another weekend project in the making.

16. Resizing a picture is a separate issue.
My original picture (in this thread) is about 2.1MB. That's because I take all my pics using the highest resolution possible. The best way to resize your pics is to get a photo editing tool. I'm using Photoshop Elements 3.0 (~$80.) Windoze comes with a Paint program, but it is dog-slow and 3/4 brain-dead. There are freebie editing programs out there. Google: shareware freeware photo edit

Shareware & freeware are wonderful, but I wanted a high quality editing tool. Most of my high resolution pictures show up as 36" x 28" in Photoshop. I just resize the biggest dimension to 8". Save them (use a different name or you will clobber the original) & you have a resized pic. You can also dumb down the resolution on the resized pic to save more space / bandwidth. I save most of mine to a 5 or 6 quality in Photoshop. Viola! My 2.1MB picture is now 79KB. It loads faster (you see the picture quicker,) saves space on the place I store them (more pics,) and reduces the amount of bandwidth.

23. So how do you submit your pics to photobucket?
Or do you just right click on any pic and then copy and paste?

25. Once you get a photobucket account & login,
the photobucket main window looks like this:

Click on the browse button, & find the picture on your hard drive. You should have a window that looks like this:

Click on the Open button & the location of your pic is now in the Picture box. Click on the Submit button & you have uploaded your picture to photobucket.

It's pretty easy after you do it once or twice.

I save it - like on my desktop - and then I can browse for it?

27. Yup. That second window is like any old regular Windoze
file search. You can move around on the Windoze file system until you find your picture.

I have found over the years that it makes life a LOT easier if you use default locations for storing things. If you are using XP, there's a folder under documents called My Pictures. Create sub-folders under that to categorize your pics.

If you are running an earlier version of Windows, create a folder in My Documents called My Pictures and use it for your pics.

Not having all your pics in one place is like having pictures scattered all over the house. Depending on your memory skills, you could end up looking in every nook and cranny. But if you had all your pics in a set of photo albums (folders) in a drawer (My Pictures,) you could easily find them.

28. I have a MAC
and it is lots easier to store pics.

One more question (and excuse me if this has already been answered) - photobucket gives me three options for each pic. Which do I copy and paste - the Url, the Tag or the Img? Thanks so much for your help.
