1. the only thing that has gotten people to riot has been
the draft.

hold on to your seat, because it's coming.

unfortunately i predict another "attack" on our country first, which will give them the "mandate" to invade another country and institute the draft.

2. People are too comfortable
People pushed into desperation and crushing poverty may riot or even start a revolution but not comfortable people. Hardship, pain, poverty, the fear of death--these are the things that burn away the fat and the laziness of a plump population.

4. I don't know if you're old enough to remember Kent State.
They'd shoot us down in the streets.

Don't for one moment believe that Tienemen Square could only happen in China. The image of that man holding nothing more than a shopping bag and standing in front of a tank will be a classic for centuries.

The grotesque criminals running this country are capable of ANYTHING and they probably view that man as someone who should have been ground beneath the tank's treads. Fortunately, whoever was driving that tank, had the decency to stop.

They probably shot the man with the shopping bag and the tank crew a couple of hours later, but we'll never know.

However, under BushCo, there would be no doubt as to the fate of the tank crew and the protester.

26. Interesting point.
Although Kent State was not a riot, and that two of the students who were killed were not really participants in the demonstration, your example is very important. Rioting does not accomplish anything positive. More, it does not result in any "changes" that progressive democrats would want to see happen.

After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed, Jimi Hendrix wrote a great song that is found on Electric Ladyland, in which he took a strong stand against rioting. In "House Burning Down," Jimi describes the riots that he recognized as self-destructive:

"Look at the sky turn a hell-fire red
Somebody's house is burning
down, down, down, down

Well, I asked my friend
'Where is that black smoke coming from?'
He just coughed and changed the subject
And said, 'Uh, it might snow some'
So I left him sipping his tea
And I jumped in my chariot and rode off to see
Just why and who could it be this time.

Sisters and brothers, daddies, mothers
Standing around crying
When I reached the scene
The flames were making a ghostly whine
So I stood on my horse's back
And I screamed without a crack
I said, ' Oh baby why did you
burn your brother's house down?'

Well someone stepped from the crowd
He was nineteen miles high
He shouts,'We're tired and disgusted
So we painted red through the sky.'
I said, 'The truth is straight ahead
so don't burn yourself instead.
Try learning instead of burning.
Hear what I say.'

So I finally rode away
But I'll never forget that day
'Cause when I reached the valley
I looked down across the way
A giant boat from space
Landed with eerie grace
And came and taken all the dead away."

Always listen to Jimi Hendrix!

41. Agreed.
"Rioting does not accomplish anything positive."

Precisely. Rioting puts us on the same level as the people who started the war. :(

Peace isn't just something that we ask from our government; the people have to adhere to it, too.

28. c'mon now
When's the last time you saw a tank facing down people here in the states? ( at least 35 years, if at all?)

I don't think that our government, as scary as Bushco can be, is in anyway comparable to the rigidities, arrests, free speech and election limitations in China. The 60s and 70s were crazy, yes, but law and duly elected lawmakers still prevailed.

31. While that is true
it does not mean that "rioting" is in any sense a good idea.

The last time the US military was used to put down demostrations within the USA would be in the 1970s. At Wounded Knee and then at the stand-off at the Jumping Bull property (the conflict that lead to Leonard Peltier's problems) both saw the US military in force. Both events were by far more violent crushing of peoples' rights than the more recent events in China.

The last time the US military occupied a city in the United States was in April 1968.

40. LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 armored tanks showed up at antiwar protest
MARINE APCs APPEAR AT ANTI-WAR PROTEST IN WESTWOOD

LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM, What were first reported to be tanks and now identified as Marine APCs showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood.

The APCs circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered.

Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the APCs, but police quickly cleared the street.

The people continued to protest the presence of the Marines, but after about ten minutes they drove off. It is still unclear as to why they were deployed to this location.

6. Holy, shit! There's liberals in Okeechobee?
:hi:

I used to cover southern Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Martin Counties for a previous employer. It never failed. Every time I took 70 out to Okeechobee, some idiot (usually a Fed Ex or UPS driver trying to hot foot it back to Fort Pierce) would damn near run me off the road.

For what it's worth, I try to drive without A/C in Florida, so I feel your pain (the humidity is a bitch right after the 4:00pm thunder shower).

Glad to know there are liberals in Okeechobee. Never stayed out there long enough to find them on my own. :)

BTW, GET OUT OF THE ROAD YOU STUPID ARMADILOS!!!!!! DUHHH! CAR WEIGHING A TON COMING!!!!! Anyways, the thing ya gotta watch for on the road are:
1. THE SEMIS! These guys stop for NOTHING! And certainly NOT a '94 Olds like mine!

I agree alot of us are comfy, but when the REAL UNemployement rate is around 13%, that is BAD NEWS kids. All it will take is a SPARK, and I think that y'all are right, the DRAFT *WILL* BE THE SPARK. And gods help us all...

...don't trust the lunatics we have in Government currently not to order the Army, or National Guard to open fire on a rioting crowd these days.

I know if I found my self in the middle of a Riot, and they had the same level of Police presence they had at the 2nd inauguration, I'd be staying low and trying to find an exit.

12. Because it's not time yet. Are you really so bent on seeing people....
...beaten, gassed, and shot when the timing is not yet correct?

Let me advise you on when you personally can begin rioting:

1. You may begin rioting when you begin to hear quotes from local police forces that are clearly in agreement with the people proposing to riot.

2. You may begin rioting when American troops refuse to get on the planes going to the Middle East, and when troops already in the Middle East refuse to fight.

3. You may begin rioting when food, water, gasoline, and utilities are no longer getting to the the vast majority of Americans.

Until then, hunker down, hoard some supplies, make sure your weapons have ammo, and continue to pay attention.

Oh, and by the way, I was told by my professors in geology classes almost forty years ago that oil would begin to run out sometime in the 2005-2012 time-frame. They were strong advocates for alternative power sources even then. If you choose to ignore that concept, so be it, but don't start whining that nobody told you this when gasoline starts to disappear over the next few years.

16. mhm mhm
this is what i like to see and hear. reminds me of old and gives me hope for the future, such fire friend :grr: it is good to see. But you must realize what many respected anarchists and political theorists such as proudhon and far back as boetie realized: the revolution must be a peaceful one. Passion is fleeting and causes are forgotton, trust me, i've run with some black flags- and i'm proud of it, b/c im in individualist - which as good country folk u sound like as well (if this was not the internet you would here my fleeting NC accent). But realize it man, the only true success and the next step in our political revolution and evolution will be when everybody wakes up one day and merely ignores the hierarchy. Like a tree w/out water (authority) present-day democracy and all of its evils will shrivel up. Can u imagine the look on Bush's face, on any fascist's face for that matter, when absolutely no one gives them the authority to exploit them anymore ! It would be more glorious than your current mindset could concieve, and that is not a comedown on you friend.

Simply put, in the end revolutions justify the metaphysical idea of government by physically overthrowing them. Sure, go ahead and destroy some McD's and NIKE factories if you want, you'll wake up the next day feeling the same (and in my case with sick whiskey drymouth). It seems like a cop-out, but hey: wait. Smoke some grass with me and everyone else whose waiting for the world to wake up. :smoke:

18. They don't riot because it conflicts with Fear Factor.
They would hate to miss a minute of TV.
Secondly, as long as there is McDonald's to feed them, Walmart to buy cheap crap from, and Disney to be entertained by, there is no reason to riot. Everything is going along quite swimmingly. Faux news tels them so. Gas prices a little high? They can blame someone else for that. Anyone know what Clinton's penis is up to these days?

People may or may not riot when the draft comes back, depending on what's on TV. A lot of them may think it won't effect them, until the notice comes and a hell of a lot of them die.
