an NFIB troll made my blood boil |
|
I was peacefully enjoying my afternoon when this clown from the NFIB came into my store to sign me up for the "National Federation of Independent Business". My business is certainly independent, it is a "one man band" of a wine store, just around the corner from our local Arkansas Deathstar, Chairman Mao's General Store. Fortunately the Chinese have not mastered winemaking, but I digress.
I am in a very competitive business that fortunately is doing well enough to keep the creditors at bay, but because I can't afford health insurance yet, I am currently one hospital visit away from financial ruin. He wanted me to sign a petition to insist that congress pass a bill that * wants to allow the NFIB to pool its members for insurance purchasing "so we can purchase insurance at the same rates as the Fortune 500 (TM). I told him that I thought it was doing nothing to solve the real problem and that we need to go to a single payer system so everyone has coverage and that our country spends the largest amount of money per capita on health care, but because ours is infected with a profit motive, a significant percentage like me go without. If we had something more like Canada's system, many more people would have better care and it wouldn't be just for the privileged.
He told be some urban legend about a pair of twins, one lived in Pennsylvania and one in Canada. "They both came down with the same disease at the same time and while the one in the US was taken care of immediately, unfortunately the one in Canada died while waiting for treatment." Is that a line or what. I told him that I would have been dead even sooner because I wouldn't have been diagnosed in the first place because I can't afford to get preventative care. "I have presented this petition to hundreds of business people like yourself and no one has refused to sign it." I told him "I guess I will be his first" and he said "I guess you don't care about the cost of health care." I said, you obviously weren't listening.

Unfortunately I am a blue shopkeeper in a very RED town. I am a lone democrat on my township board out in sticksville, but we calculate that not being a Repug when running for local offices is a 25 point handicap. I have to be careful about what I say to my customers; if the repugs I have as customers boycott their enemy like I boycott the Arkansas Deathstar, I would go out of business.

come down with the same, apparently deadly disease, at the same time?
That's one big freak-ass coincidence.
(not to mention pure bullshit)

4. Our NFIB rep came in this week |
|
Asking for us to renew. I told him no way after all the propaganda for Bush that was sent out before the election. We talked some about health care too.
He kept telling me that I have the same vote as any other business, yada yada yada. That was an hour of my life I'll never get back.
As for the health insur, I hear ya. We have some pre-existing conditions and health insur is just not an option for us.

that they advocate that I agree with yet. They and the Chamber were the cheerleaders that sunk the healthcare debate in the 1990s.

We had a thread once, which discussed the exact city and location (road name/number and name of factory/plant.) We considered whether or not this dude knows he's famous on the internets!
This guy is our Moran Mascot! And remember, on DU, it's always spelled moran! :)
edit: Was it an anti-Iraq war protest or an environmental protest? I think it was in the mid-west.

That pic is a classic, though - right down to the violation-of-flag-code bandanna. :)

Mullet Man Moran Mascot is more accurate. Thanks for tagging this guy for me. I was trying to think up something clever to call this guy.

the people in Canada waiting for non-emergency or procedures that are not imperative do have a waiting period. But people who need life-saving or serious quality-of-life procedures get seen in a timely manner. Any Canadians who can debunk or support this???
