10. And NEVADA is 49th!!!
Gee, could it POSSIBLY be because of how the gaming corporations' idea of furthering the kids' education is to have a mock-up "job fair" for the 3rd graders (or whatever) every year where they tell the boys and girls all about the wonderful job opportunities that await them as waiters and maids?

And yet those same schools have to put out memos on a regular basis, begging the parents to donate rolls of paper towels and other basic necessities. I wouldn't raise a child in this state under any circumstances. No f**king way.

18. This is SO mis named
The real name of this ranking is "Best and worst supported educational system in the country"

It has nothing to do with the intelligence of the state's residence, only the priority its government has placed on education.

I went from the top state to the bottom state. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in intelligence, although I have noticed one in education.

You are SO! right. I can't figure this out. I grew up in Iowa, often #1 in literacy, #8 here. Moved to Louisiana, always lowest in literacy, close at #46. I now live in Indiana, close to Louisiana in literacy, #17 here. People sometimes ask me why I moved here: I tell them I wanted to raise the average IQ of the state by 10 points (used it in Louisiana too).

Smartest to the dumbest, how? How did they measure this? The only thing I find on the site is something about public education--grade schools and high schools in particular.

There is another list about the number of people with graduate degrees.

But this by no means idetifies the intelligence of DU members from these states....

I was educated in #8 Iowa and currently live in number 33-34 Texas... THere is a true difference... Not surprised.

Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 05:44 PM by Blue_In_AK
I notice Alaska is 45th, but I wonder if our score isn't skewed somewhat because of Native village cultural differences that might cause them to score lower on standardized tests or whatever. "Smart" is such a relative term.

on ed. - oh Ph.D's?? No wonder. Alaska is university challenged.

This was discussed over at the message boards at http://www.countryweekly.com

Their reasons for the red states doing so poor were the illegal aliens and people who dont speak English, who live in the southern states.
