The firendly folks at the American Family Association
sent me the lovely little email I reprint here for your amusement. At the end is my reply.

Dear Friends of Jesus:
You wouldn't believe how thrilled I am that Senator Durbin has had the courage to accurately label the Bush Administration (not the troops--he wasn't talking about the troops, as you falsely accuse him of having done in your self-righteous, sanctimonious, wingnut Lying-for-Jesus way). This is not Hitler 1944, it's Hitler 1938, 5 years into the regime and nobody sent to the death camps yet.

1. Thought I'd have a little fun...
I went to the petition site, and deleted the pre-inserted message and wrote the following to the fine Senator.

Dear Senator Durbin,

Thank you so much for your honesty in the Senate on Wednesday. If more of our leaders would begin to speak the truth, maybe we could wake up the folks in this country who are being led astray by the extreme religious right.

I, too, am deeply concerned with the way our prisoners are being treated, not just in Guantanamo but also in Iraq. Regardless of what this mis-administration calls them, these people are PRISONERS OF WAR and are entitled to all rights and protections due them under the Geneva Convention. There is a certain level of respect that is due to all people, and torture is NEVER acceptable behavior.

I respect the job that our military is trying to do. What I do not and cannot respect is the attitude that these POW's are not to be treated in a civil manner. This attitude does not originate with our fine soldiers but rather up the chain of command, all the way up to the President.

Keep up the good work!
