DU and the DSM the Ripple Effect Continues . . .

ripple effect: NOUN: A gradually spreading effect or influence:

image of water, a brightness
not gold, not silver,rippling
as if with laughter.
~ Denise Levertov~

The pure serene of memory in one man,—
A ripple widening from a single stone
Winding around the waters of the world.
~Theodore Roethke ~

The ripple effect of DU is tremendous. Each one of us that stone that is tossed into the pond, each one of us tossing stones into the pond that is DU. We come here to learn, to share, to vent and to encourage and our actions, our posts, our arguments and our agreements ripple out and touch each other just as we are touched by the ripples of others.

We are a grassroots community made up of people that believe in some basic principles -- Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We see our world as precious and we see how frail it is. We recognize that we cannot change the world on our own; we know that there is strength in numbers and we each try our best to improve our corner of the world. We strive for acceptance, not just of our ideals and ourselves, but also for others and their values and their views.

We long for the nation we once knew, one that was the model of democracy for all others to follow and aspire to be like. In these last few years we have seen forces that seem beyond our control warp and distort everything we have held dear. We have been told that we are the minority and they have used our patriotism as a weapon against us and they have battered us like an abusive spouse, telling us with each blow to our liberties “if you love me, you will take it, I abuse you because I love you and I know what is best for you.” But we don’t believe them. We know it is about control and not love. It is about power and not justice. So we come here to remind each other and ourselves that we are not alone, that we are not the minority. We gather strength from each other and we share ideas. Because of the ripples we make in the pond, because of the ripples that touch us, we are willing to stand up and call them on their lies; we are armed with the truth. For we know what true love of country is and we know we are patriots.

We, the members of the grassroots community of DU, have made a difference and we will continue to do so. In January, we shut down congress’ telephones as we flooded the switchboards with calls and faxes and emails demanding someone stand with Conyers and Tubb-Jackson to oppose the certification of the Ohio votes. No, we didn’t change the outcome, but we made them hear us and we made them take notice. Our ripples were felt.

We must continue to do, to try, to share and to encourage. We must continue to reach out to each other and to reach for the stars. To not try is to be complicit in their crimes; to not try is to enable their evil, to encourage their corruption. We must continue to toss the stones into the ponds; we must continue to allow the ripples formed to carry us beyond their myths and beyond ourselves.

We have made a difference. In a week’s time we have raised almost $35,000 to help a member of our community afford surgery necessary to save his life. We have pinched our pennies, given what we can and extended our hands and our love, our prayers and our positive energies to one of our own.

As we reach out to help one man, as we unite to help Andy, our single efforts have had a ripple effect that we never expected, creating ripples that we can never count. The grassroots effort has been strengthened, the DU community united and our love has been multiplied a hundred times over. Our faith in humanity has been restored, our belief in each other and ourselves renewed, as we reach out to help someone we love. With laughter and determination, with humor and wit, we have reached out to help a friend and we will attain our goal. For we know that with faith and love (and laughter), all things are possible.

Our efforts continue and we continue to throw our stones into the ponds, hoping our ripples will join together to form the waves of relief so necessary. Not just for Andy but for our nation, for justice, for election reform, for health care, for civil rights for all, for all of the causes we each hold so dear, our environment, our freedoms, our children, our future and for peace.

I stand united with you all, I am proud to be a member of this community. Your ripples have touched me in ways that I will never adequately be able to express and your ripples have given me the courage to toss my own stones into the pond, to cause more ripples, to try to make a difference, to try to save my corner of the world.

Bless you all . . .

Our efforts have continued since this piece was first posted and our ripples continue to have an effect. We, the grassroots community that is DU, have continued to post threads encouraging action, threads passionately demanding that the lies of this administration be exposed and posts supporting and even questioning the leaders of our party and our nation.

Our determination and resolve prevented "their" efforts to ignore and bury the Downing Street Minutes. WE kept the issue alive, our ripples helped keep the DSM afloat and our ripples continue to bring the DSM closer to the shores of investigative hearings and the administration closer to accountability for their lies and deception.

We have encouraged our friends, our neighbors, our relatives and other netizens to sign Conyers petition demanding that the contents of the Downing Street Minutes be investigated and that this administration be held accountable for their lies that have resulted in the deaths and maiming of thousands, the destruction of another nation and the weakening of our own nation.

WE ARE PATRIOTS and we making a difference. We are a grassroots community that is a force to reckon with. We are returning our government to its rightful owners, WE THE PEOPLE. They work for us, they are OUR elected officials and they are beginning to pay attention to US. With our keyboards and our internet, our faxes and our pens, we have armed ourselves with the truth and we are demanding that they pay attention to us, the people that they work for, the people that they took an oath to represent, protect and serve.

We have been successful, we have had an impact and our ripples are being felt throughout this nation. And they are afraid.

They will attack us, as they fear us. They try to disrupt this board with silly partisan battles, attacking our leaders, attacking us for supporting our favorites, attacking our stands and distorting our efforts. They can try, but their efforts will have little effect because we know that dissent does not mean hate, that challenging our leaders to be our leaders does not mean we hate our leaders, we just expect our leaders to represent us and to protect our nation.

They mock our efforts, they attack our members and they allege that we are the liars, we are not patriotic and we should be ashamed.

They are wrong.

Because we love this nation so much, because we know what we can do when we unite and focus on the truth and the needs of others and our nation and not our petty differences, we can and have made a difference. Might does not make right. The truth can set us free and we have the truth on our side and the love of our nation and our fellow citizens as our inspiration. Our efforts are not selfish, our efforts are not spurred on by greed and control, and our efforts are for our nation and for future generations.

Keep throwing those stones DU, keep making the ripples that are bringing about change, that are touching the lives of millions, that are flooding our leaders with inspiration and courage. Demand that they stand up for us, that they listen to us and let them know that we want our nation back. Let them know that we are the majority and that we are tired of the lies and the hate and the perverted manipulations that have weakened our nation, that have resulted in the senseless deaths and killings in other lands and that are bankrupting our coffers and our souls.

I proudly stand by you all and I promise to continue to try to make a difference in my corner of the world. Your ripples give me the courage and they carry me when I am tired. I am grateful to you all.

:patriot: :-) I DU BELIEVE! :-) :patriot:

15. Sure you can repost his quote. And here's something he wrote to me
Edited on Sat Jun-18-05 03:30 PM by Nothing Without Hope
and about 3 other people when his blog first started. I'll give what I posted there for him and then his reply. I treasure it and hope you get some of the same feeling from it I do:

Rep. Conyers, I know that your primary duty is to represent your own constituency in Michigan, but I want to tell you how inspiring and heartening it has been to have you and your colleagues stand for ALL of us, all across the country. (I am in Massachusetts.) You stand for hope and the restoration of law and democracy to this country.

Your welcome introduction of this blog is the subject of a new thread in the Democratic Underground political discussion forum here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1675727
In case you did not already realize it, the Democratic Underground Home Page and Greatest pages are perhaps the best places in the progressive internet to get the very latest news. The Democratic Underground site is also an excellent place to ask for help in digging for documentation of obscure but important facts.

I hope you're not too discomfitted at being seen as a hero by so many people, sir. I'm afraid you're just going to have to live with that.

"Thank you" doesn't begin to express the gratitude I feel for what you and your courageous colleagues have done and are continuing to do. You're not only a leader in the fight for justice, you are showing HOW to fight for justice and infusing hope that it is still possible to win.

And here is his reply:

I am truly gratified to receive all of your comments and reaction to my new interactive web site. As I am sure you realize, being being on the losing side of so many votes so often in Congress can be discouraging, but I gain much comfort from comments like these. It is the essence of democracy and pluralism to interact directly with you as this new and improved blog will allow me to do. Keep submitting comments and letting me know what you think. I welcome your ideas and thoughts.

And merh - I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you reposted his recent thanks to DU in this thread too. It's for ALL of us, after all!

58. Thanks
I just wanted to drop by and say thanks for all your help and efforts on this and so many other things. In the days ahead, I will announce some next steps. We must do more, more and more to bring the truth to light about the deceptions that brought our nation to war, and resulted in the loss of the lives of over 1700 Americans and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis. In the meantime, I cannot thank you enough for your help and support.

20. Uh-HUH, uh-HUH, uh-HUH!!!
Yes, merh. Once again, a bee-yoo-tee-ful think piece.

And all true, as usual.

WE ARE the ones who pushed this into the mainstream. It was the efforts of US and others like us, all over the net, all over everywhere, doing it little by little. WE were the ones who pushed and pushed and pushed, who called our congresspeople, our senators, our media, who wrote letters to the editor, who talked with friends, left leaflets on cars, chatted it up around the watercooler and over the back fence and in the checkout line. It was US. Here at DU and elsewhere around the internet and beyond - among the progressive grassroots. WE are what did it and what kept this alive and now kicking.

Ripple Effect indeed. Indeed. And thank God!

But - um - that does NOT mean we sit back and sop up our achievement and let down our guard and get complacent. That IS, however, what rove would like, and - be aware - will probably try to enable. This is NOT a done deal. NOT YET. Not until impeachment proceedings are not only well underway, but the bastards have been convicted and removed from office - preferably to face charges in a war crimes tribunal.

32. I quote from page 803
of Arthur M. Schlesinger's wonderful book, "Robert Kennedy and his times."

"Let no one, he said in his most eloquent passage, be discouraged by

'the belief there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills -- against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence.... Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.

'It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.' 60. here is one that seems to dovetail
We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood -- it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, "Too late." There is an invisible book of life that faithfully records our vigilance or our neglect. Omar Khayyam is right: "The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on."

I have seen the most evil sides of mankind, the most horrid examples of humanity and christianity, some even on this board, but that won't stop me in my endeavors or destroy my belief in the basic goodness of others.

If my simple rants encourages just one person weakened by the evil that is trying to destroy all that we cherish, then my rants serve a greater purpose than the purging that I find so necessary to survive.

Live and let live, make love not war. God help us all, I am so tired of the hate, the evil and the fear that I have to remind myself of the good, the love and the power we all have at our disposal, if we just believe in ourselves and each other.

Thankfully for me, I have found an audience that appreciates my written screams for justice and peace.

Thank you so very much for your encouragement and your passion!
See the ripples that you have caused? I feel more empowered and encouraged. :pals:

Ripple on! :patriot:

that barely perceptible, hardly a few centimeters wave height addition on the ocean becomes a tidal wave or Tsunami when it hits Bu$hCO!

I want to wash that cabal out of my nation too, but I want them to face a tribunal for their war crimes.

34. Great post!
They might try to hide the truth (by relegating the hearing to the basement,) but you saw how they couldn't snuff out the truth. The hearing and your post are inspirations to us all. Thank you!

51. Are You Kidding? You Betcha! Hanging on the Wall Right Now.
I was feeling so over-whelmed last night. Couldn't sleep. You know, that impending Bushivitz-Cheney eerie feeling hangin' over me. Never have I had a run-in out here, with anyone. Last night, had 2 post rudely to me, as if the freepers were all over the place out here.

Well, feeling tried, hassled and over-run mentally by the daily crap of living under a Dictatorship bent on ruining us (we're already there) there was your post.

It literally made my day and that's saying a lot these days. Your post ranks right-up there with the "DSM" & our Congressional members braving the storm for us right now.

Thank you... thank you very, very much. And while I'm at it, I'd like to thank everyone on the DU group for just being here... all of you gave me a safe harbor during this strange and eerie storm.

52. Wow
:wow:  I am so glad that my writing "made your day", thanks so much for the wonderful compliment.

We have to keep encouraging each other. We are making a difference, they haven't totally destroyed our nation (though they have come pretty damned close) and we CAN RECLAIM IT.

The pendulum is swinging back, we are making a difference. :patriot:

As for the freepers - remember my favorite line from a movie "Fuck 'em, their trash!"

Never Give Up! :patriot:

See how your stone (post) sent a ripple to encourage me? The ripple effect! Ripple on!
