Hillary Clinton and Rupert Murdoch getting a little too close

The Odd Couple ’08
by Ben Smith

Hillary Clinton hasn’t had her Hayman Island moment. Yet.

Hayman is a resort off Queensland, Australia, to which Rupert Murdoch flew Tony Blair in 1995 for the annual conference of his right-of-center media megalith, News Corp.

It was a crucial step in the complex and surprising negotiation between the two men that would boost Labour’s Mr. Blair up the little stoop and through the door at 10 Downing Street two years later.

Now, the specter of an alliance between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Murdoch—two of the most powerful and guarded figures in the world—is beginning to whet the appetites of the chattering classes.

At the moment, the two speak of each other (through surrogates) in notably similar terms:

"Senator Clinton respects him and thinks he is smart and effective," said a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines.

"Rupert has respect for her political skills and for the hard work that she’s done as a Senator," said an executive vice president at News Corp., Gary Ginsberg.

Other evidence is still a bit lean. Lunch has been taken at News Corp.’s midtown headquarters, friendly noises have emanated from the New York Post’s editorial page, and Mr. Murdoch has retained a key advisor to Mrs. Clinton, Howard Wolfson.

1. Hilliary Clinton wants to be the republican candidate for 2008!

As far as I'm concerned they can have her!

2. Not to defend her, but she did push proper healthcare reform...
before the repukes decried it as "communism" and all the other lies.

21. Actually, she pushed a huge giveaway for the health insurance industry
The repukes called it communism, but it was far from it.

We needed Single Payer, and she came up with a crock that nobody could vote for.

3. Murdoch needs Clinton put a new face on his worldwide business
George W Bush and Republicans causes other nations not to want to do business with the United States. Murdoch wants to sell the rest of the world movies and other media by satellite. The worldwide boycott and mistrust of Bush hurts Murdoch from growing.

5. And the Times newspaper in London
which broke the DSM story is owned by Murdoch. However, Murdoch isn't entirely removed from Clinton bashing. He has ties to the new anti-Clinton book by Ed Klein.

10. this is closest to what I believe.
Murdoch is a pure capitalist, first, and if need be will ally with Satan himself if it helps his bottom line.

25. Yep. He has also damaged our democratic republic with his
brand of capitalism.

I despise the man.

Well, at the very least, this story will give the right-wingers a moment of frightful bewilderment.

(Maybe they'll all go gray! :smoke: )

I remember reading here earlier this week a quote someone posted from Murdoch and how he wanted to get revenge on Bush. I wonder why he wanted to and then I read how Murdoch is a captialist and recently Murdoch added General Clark onto his network. Why would he add a democratic four star general on his network as a pundint??? There is definitley something up. Isn't Fox news also apart of the Bilderberg group?

4. Dude!!! Rupert published the memos!!!
At first I wondered, "Who pissed in his tea!"

BUT, then, I remembered, the man has no interest in political influence, he profits off the winds of politics.

I seriously loathe this man who's love of money drives him, without discretion. He has the power to shape a better world and he really does not give a shit about that.

However, he is jumping ships. I will be grateful FOR THAT even if it has nothing to do with an advocacy for humanity. DAMN, we human beings can take every weird turn we can get. YES?

6. Well, he may own the Times of London, but when he bought it
they retained editoral control. They can print whatever they like, no thanks to Murdoch is nesscessary.

23. My take on it: The BFEE is becoming an embarrassment...
...and therefore Rupert is cutting them loose. They are such pathetically obvious thugs: too greedy, too bloodthirsty, and they aren't even very good liars! Yeah, I know they lie all the time but they ALSO keep getting caught at it! And the upshot of it is that they are seriously starting to hurt his bottom line.

I agree with the assessment of Rupert Murdoch as more of an opportunist than political ideologue. I believe he's currently in the market for "Neocon lite" and therefore his truce if not outright courtship (YET) of Hillary.

12. I realize that you are the OP but ...
how cn you give this any credence whatsoever? To say that the evidence of this dastardly joining of evil forces is thin is to give it far more respect than it deserves. Thin to the point of being non-existent.

22. Yes I do. I've always thought they're corrupt. Is there a problem with it?
Many on the left and right think the same thing. The final straw for me was reading the leaked documents of Clinton's absolutely connected at the waist ties with the Bush family and all of the PNAC members.

24. Conservatives are hoping Hillary runs for president
Fox News is more excited about Hillary than the Democrats are. It's strange how they love to talk about her. She's boring, imho. Hope she doesn't run for president.

28. Conservatives in both parties want Hillary to run.
Conservative Republicans think that she can't win, Conservative Democrats think that she can't lose.

Progressives think that she's just more of the same.

..talk about the new slanderous book and allegations about Hillary Clinton.

I knew there had to be more to it than "fairness".
