Dear Mr. Gingrich:
I note with some amazement that you continue to sign yourself, “Speaker,” referring of course to your former post with the United States House of Representatives. I feel it is my duty to inform you, Sir, in case it had escaped your notice, that “Speaker” is a post which you have not held for some years; indeed, almost a decade has passed since your stewardship of that position. Whereas certain positions include sufficient cachet that one may hold onto them well beyond the acceptable expiration date, the power that accrued to you as Speaker of the House has long since passed from your grasp. Moreover, you have indeed had sufficient time to file a forwarding address with the Postal Service. So please, do not longer avail yourself of that title for which you were long ago judged and found wanting by your own party.

Your humble servant,
Hardhead

1. Apparently, once a Speaker, you're always a Speaker:

(this is from yesterday's Conyers' letter)

"...Milbank makes much of other lawmakers calling me 'Mr. Chairman' and says I liked it so much that I used 'chairmanly phrases.' Milbank may not know that I was the Chairman of the House Government Operations Committee from 1988 to 1994. By protocol and tradition in the House, once you have been a Chairman you are always referred to as such. Thus, there was nothing unusual about my being referred to as Mr. Chairman."

I would presume the same applies to the "Speaker" title.

2. Seeing as how Newt was thrown from the post by his own party
I don't think he merits the title anymore. His official title is Mr. Newt HAS-BEEN Gingrich, official Wash-up and Wannabe of the Repube Party. He has no future, despite his dearest fantasies.
