WAPost Columnist Applebaum on C-Span saying Europe suffers Christophobia!
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 11:32 AM by KoKo01
She's appearing on Panel Discussion of "Ethics and Public Policy Center," discussing new book called: "The Cube and the Cathedral."

She said Tony Blair is mocked because of his religion. That Old Eupope has rejected Christianity and become Christophobic. And that the rejection of the EU Constitution was because those voting against it are going back to religious principles of Christianity.

She says that American coverage of the new Pope was unbiased but the Brits and Euro's were critical of the Pope mocking him for being a "Nazi Sympathizer and a supporter of pedophiles." :eyes:

She says that the European schools are not teaching religion and that causes a "Christophobia" to exist where mocking of religion is the norm.

She's a columnist for WaPo....SHEESH.... Opus Dei? She was very worked up and sounded almost angry as she introduced this book. Sounded almost like a zealot DeLay type...but from a Catholic point of view.

6. The Old Testament has more bloodshed.
Modern militaristic Christian fundamentalists view the entire Bible literally, and the old testament certainly has more bloodshed than the new.

5. Old Europe rejected Christianity for several reasons.
Primarily:

1) Governments not entirely enthused about being dominated by some old fart in Rome.

2) People not entirely enthused about being jailed or slaughtered because of their religious affiliation.

3) Common sense.

7. They say the Europeans are rejecting "Biblical Religions." What the heck
Sounds like the Religious Fundies here or are they trying to emphasize the "Old Testament" over the "New Testament?" Catholicism has always been based on the New Testament so this is a change, more along the lines of the Fundamentalist Evangelicals.

What a dangerous alliance.

8. Now Applebaum is talking about the Holocaust celebrations when she
lived in Europe...She says the Holocaust was wrong because it was an illustration of Rampant Nationalism that became intolerant. She's saying it's wrong to be tolerant of all cultures because it means that all cultures are the same so we shouldn't make distinctions. So she says lessons of Holocaust is that we should be "centrists" and not oppose our thought on anyone else. So she says that's WRONG! She's angry that Catholics might have been culpable in the Holocaust and she thinks that view has hurt religion (for her that means HER RELIGION)...

She says there's a refusal to see anything worthwhile about "old religion" she says theres a worship of "paintings" ?

Denying the term "Nazi anti-Semitism." These people are holocaust deniers, I think...listing to this. The Pat Buchanan wing of the Catholic Church. As scary as the DeLay crowd.

Calling folks like me (mainstream Episcopal) "secularists" which need to be re-educated. They keep talking about New Europe being "secularists" having forgotten their Old Europe traditional values.

So the "Holocaust" caused "Secularism" to rise and people to become more tolerant of others and that's not a good thing. :nuke:

Mona Charin is one of the members of this group, btw.

9. She's a WaPo "Columnist"
That means she's allowed to be biased, inflammatory, and inaccurate.

12. Gee, she apparenty never heard of the 30 Years War
When much of cental Europe was ground into dust by a religous/economic war. Are you Protestant or Catholic? Wrong answer, then die! No wonder that modern Europe is more secular than we are; they study history.
