I don't know how many of you remember the television miniseries "V" from the 1980s, but it painted a very clear picture how fascism could rear its evil head here in the U.S. Some of it was over the top, but it brought up some very interesting questions about the way Americans respond to authority.

I've said for years that the only way we're going to see an end to the nationalist squabbles here on Earth is if we are faced by a threat from outside...i.e. invading aliens. But only if they attack openly. If they use a stealthy means of gaining power (like proposed in the "V" series, we'd have a serious problem. Many people are VERY susceptible to 'smoke and mirrors' for some inexplicable reason.

We DO have potentially unifying threats (the self-imposed threat of global warming, for example) but this creates the dichotomy between those who are willing to take responsibility for it and those who want to bury their heads and pretend we had nothing to do with it and 'it's not happening anyway.'
