So, my mother's a racist. |
|
She says she's a Democrat, but she's a big racist toward people of hispanic descent. All of them.
We were watching SportsCenter, I say that the Angels are owned by a billionaire named Arte Moreno, and she makes a remark like, "oh, he probably got the money smuggling in his fucking family and other Mexicans".
She's a fucking racist. She sees someone dark-skinned, she thinks they're an "illegal". She sees or hears spanish, she makes a derogatory remark towards "those mexicans". She sees a house with a Mexican in the front lawn, she makes a comment about how there are probably "20 or 30 more" in the house. She's on some racist newsgroup most of the time. I looked at it once, and almost threw up.

Have you tried to tell her she shouldn't think that way?

I've never quite understood how some people can justify pre-judging someone based on something like that. People are individuals and you'll find good and bad in all races.

4. One thing I have learned |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 12:10 AM by jzodda
Since my Dad and I have very different politics I have learned the hard way is that good family relations and bad politics do not mix well.
I would just try and ignore it....If not you will have crazy fights like I used to with my dad. I laugh about it now but we almost came to blows over politics in the past. Now of course if my dad was putting on a white robe and burning crosses I would of course NOT stay silent but when it comes to commenting on the news and people I see outside I bite my tounge.
Also she has been duped by people like Bill O'reilly. Let me guess she watches his show right? He likes to classify the poor people coming here to work as some kind of security issue. Gets all the older folks all worked up.

my mother is a huge Dem and is usually very open minded, but when it comes to discussing Muslims she sounds like Ann Coulter sometimes. She is a feminist, so she justifies her comments by telling me how unfairly Muslim women are treated...female genital mutilation, being stoned to death b/c they were raped, and wearing the burka. I think her anger over this has led her to overgeneralize. I have tried explaining to her that these conditions do not exist everywhere but it never gets me anywhere. In my experience, someone calling themselves a democrat doesn't mean that they are necessarily open minded when it comes to different races/religions. (i wish it were different, though)

that FGM is not a Islamic custom, it predates Islam, is almost unheard of in the world's most populous muslim nation and is widely practised by Christian and animist communities in Africa.
Don't know how I'd react to a bigot family member, thankfully it's not an issue for me

He reguarly bashes both Bush and blacks or mexicans in the same sentence.
It's a weird line to straddle. And I know tons of people that do it.

9. Sorry to hear about this. |
|
When I hear my family say racial remarks, I want to separate from them. I can't believe "my" family has this ugliness inside of them. I am so disappointed in them, I know you must be too. My family always said I should be more like them, since I was young. I felt like there was something wrong with me. Then as I grew up, I counted my lucky stars that I was different. I like me.
Like yourself, and like the differences between you and your mom. It is so very much her dark problem, don't let it become yours. You don't deserve it.

10. Sad when the "haters" are members of your family. |

I would say that she is showing signs of 2nd stage "conserva-titis". If she begins listening to Michael Savage and displays any photos of Karl Rove on the fridge, you will need to call in a professional for intervention. If she begins to parrot Anne Coulter, you need to grab your things and just run from the house.
Seriously, I would have a talk with her if I were you. You should explain how offensive such language is and that she should try to open her eyes a bit more and be a bit more tolerant. Unless she is 100% Native American everyone living in the United States is a "foreigner". Personally, I doubt any of this will do any good, but you should make a point of expressing how it makes YOU feel when she speaks like that. Good luck.

My co-workers (who all vote liberal) are always throwing around racist sentiments.
For example, they are always telling me to avoid "those Mexican" or "those black" men because they are nothing but "trouble."
One time, a co-worker said she was looking for a new home away from "niggers."
They'll also joke about using "politically correct" terms when we have black patients (I work in a dr's office) in the waiting room.
Even my boss gets into it. He remarked once about an how an Arabic patient was so fat, an American bomb would never miss him! :-( He also remarked how the patient acted like "Saddam."
But the worst... My co-worker confessed she robbed an Arabic woman (the woman dropped an envelope of money and she snatched the envelope instead of returning it to the woman) because she assumed the woman's husband "owned 9 gas stations." She's the same woman who said sickle cell was a "nigger disease" and she didn't understand how her "white" family member got diagnosed with it.
It's absolute HELL dealing with these people. And ALL these people vote Democratic.
It boggles my mind.
And I really do like all the people I work with. I just don't understand why they are so misguided. Usually, I try to ignore their comments and focus on their positive aspects... And they do have many. And I'm sure the people you love do too.

Unless your mom commits a hate crime/speech that is illegal, just remember she's still your mom. You're in a position to nudge her perspective. How? Only you will know when the time is right.
When I was young, I thought all people of Arabic descent had the potential to be terrorists.
My dad (immigrant from Europe) kept nudging the conversation to stimulate my own critical thinking. He pointed out that we had Islamic friends and co-workers. He read to me from foreign papers that exposed bad US foreign policy. He asked me what I would do if it happened here in America. It took a long time for me to come around but I did.
I can't imagine how he would have felt if he had given up on me before he died (over 12 years ago). Can you imagine how you would feel if you gave up and something happened to your mom?
Maybe if I were in your position... I'd hire someone to help you clean out the garage or attic, or get a hispanic friend to help you.
I'm sorry if I've intruded in a way that's simplistic or nonsense. But she's your mom first and if your sense of injustice about racism is any indication... maybe she's worth your while to exercise patience.

He hates black people and Jews. But he switched from Dem to Libertarian years ago.
I give him partial credit for me becoming an antiracist punk back in the 80s.

Egads. I'd like to think "different generation", but it's more than that, much more. My mom is almost the same age and she's not like that at all.

and my mother was saying, look at that, they all get welfare and they have Cadillacs. Yeh, some of them were Cadillacs. 12-year-old Cadillacs that probably cost $200 back then, with bald tires and broken windows.
I was about 12 and I said, mom, you better get new glasses. They are driving junkmobiles. She never mentioned it again. My father is a flat out nazi, but he wasn't in the car at the time.
