Robert Kennedy Jr. on Imus@7:30am Eastern
to discuss his article in Rolling Stone on childhood vaccines and Government coverups. He has been cancelled on other "news" programs. Imus won't let this issue die. Should be interesting. He is scheduled to be on at 7:30 am.

30. Imus is as gutless as Tweety.
I'll never forget his lukewarm endorsement of Kerry. I don't know why he bothered.

And, btw, why didn't anyone pick up on a show that Imus made about the same time where he made a comment that he was contacted by someone in the Bush Administration asking about giving a donation to his wife's Ranch charity? He said something like, why are they contacting me? They should call her, it's her charity.

Knowing what we know about the Bush Administration, why didn't we see this as an attempt to soften Imus's endorsement of Kerry? IMHO, it worked.

4. This is the article that Robert Kennedy Jr. wrote :
Deadly Immunity
By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Salon.com

Thursday 16 June 2005

A Salon/Rolling Stone joint investigation.
When a study revealed that mercury in childhood vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids, the government rushed to conceal the data - and to prevent parents from suing drug companies for their role in the epidemic.

(Image: Salon.com)

In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Ga. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session - only private invitations to 52 attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly "embargoed." There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.

The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency's massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines - thimerosal - appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. "I was actually stunned by what I saw," Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants - in one case, within hours of birth - the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.

snip
But instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry's bottom line.

"We are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits," said Dr. Robert Brent, a pediatrician at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. "This will be a resource to our very busy plaintiff attorneys in this country." Dr. Bob Chen, head of vaccine safety for the CDC, expressed relief that "given the sensitivity of the information, we have been able to keep it out of the hands of, let's say, less responsible hands." Dr. John Clements, vaccines advisor at the World Health Organization, declared flatly that the study "should not have been done at all" and warned that the results "will be taken by others and will be used in ways beyond the control of this group. The research results have to be handled."

snip
The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government's vaccine-related documents - including the Simpsonwood transcripts - and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas. In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. Congress repealed the measure in 2003 - but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders. "The lawsuits are of such magnitude that they could put vaccine producers out of business and limit our capacity to deal with a biological attack by terrorists," says Andy Olsen, a legislative assistant to Frist.

6. Please welcome Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Kennedy: I got into this because I'm an attorney for the NDC... in 19 states it is unsafe to eat the fish because of mercury in the fish... Instead of strengthening the law, bush* is weaking the law. ... . I started looking into it, talking to doctors, etc. It is clear that the govt. agencies that are supposed to protect us and in cahoots with the pharms industries.

Chris Matthews said he didn't have any interest in this. Said it wasn't his crusade.

Matthews doesn't have any guts. Kennedy said this should be everybody's crusade. ... These people have literally poisoned an entire generation of children. Taling about studies and how horrendesously toxic this stuff is. They can inject it into mice, and cause autism in the mice.

11. Autism was unknown until the 1930's.
It exploded after 1989. One in every 66 children has it. The defenders of it in our government say its vague, but we're getting rid of it. Now they are shipping it abroad.

This issue is a sidetrack for me. Do you see what this does to families. This shatters them. Healthy kids are given these shots. By late afternoon, they are having seizures. Costs $70,000 per year to take care of them for the rest of their lives. These people know this, and are still injecting kids.

The stonewall that you hit when you try to talk about this issue!

Kennedy: I think that people like you and me have to keep telling the truth. The scientific evidence is so overwhelming. It's amazing that these guys continue to champion it. They are giving it all over the world now. China now has 1.8 million cases of autism. (He cited other countries that how have autism). You think Iraq has been bad for our foreign policy, what's going to happen when they find out that we are using foreign policy to destroy the brain of their children.

The people who are against an investigation are the top regulators of the CDC, etc. It's an institutional bureaucratic coverup. It's so sickening. The science is so clear that this is deadly!

16. Imus: "they tell me it's hopeless to go up against the pharma. industry"
and then he added, after listening to RFK Jr., "but maybe it's not" ...

many people, and many DU'ers, don't like Imus because he's frankly a total ass ... but man, that was quite an interview he did with RFK Jr. ... it really highlighted the way big corporations control not only our government but our media as well ...

Imus talked about how the truth about thimerasol is being kept from the public ... he stated that the only shows David Kirby, who wrote the book called "Evidence of Harm" exposing the dangers of themerisol, has been allowed to appear on were the Imus show and Gerafalo's show on AAR ... he said Tweety refused to cover the topic because he was a coward (implying he was afraid of the pharmaceutical industry) ...

RFK Jr. made the critical point that a major part of American foreign policy has been our export of childhood vaccinations ... he pointed to a substantial rise in autism rates in China that may be linked to these vaccines ... and he said that world opinion towards the US would be incredibly damaged if a link between thimerasol and autism is eventually proven ...

We are being screwed by * and Gang daily. I missed a week of work this year because of the flu. I was incredibly sick. I had 103 degress temp, nasuea, chills, sweats, delerium. lost 12 pounds, & lost a week of work.

price is driven up to new highs and then the "its a miracle" pharmaceutical companies will find enough for every one. My mother HAD to have a flue vaccine last year. The doctor found "some" at only $100.00 per shot. Just another bilking of America.

28. Sounds Like RFK Jr. To Me...
Always had that raspy voice. His father did as well...and generally spoke softly, never yelled.

I imagine RFK Jr. has been doing a ton of interviews in recent days and a lot of traveling...thing that can wear on a person's voice. Clinton has a similar problem.

Being a disciple of his father, watching RFK Jr. gives me goosebumps. He's speaks like his father...including the passion. Part of me is glad he's stayed in the shadows all these years as he's become a great advocate for truly important causes.

35. They're Very Nervous About Politics
A couple years ago they wanted Chris Kennedy to run for Congress. While he could have had the nomination and tons of attention, that's exactly what he didn't want. After all his family has been through, many of RFK's children have fought hard not only to have their own identities but also to avoid the media and publicity their name brings. It killed one brother, destroyed two others and I'm sure his sister's loss in Maryland sent yet another message.

As a wise Democratic friend of mine has long said..."What the Democrats need aren't more Kennedys...they need more people LIKE the Kennedys".

Cheers

37. I Know What You Mean...But People Don't Want To Hear
The name is as much a millstone as an advantage. Between expectations, stereotypes and problems with other family members, I'm amazed RFK, Jr. has been so true to so many great causes over the years and truly has established his own identity. I tend to think his best days, like his uncle, are still ahead. Sadly, we haven't had the chance to experience what Kennedy wisdom is really about.

Environmental issues make people yawn. I think part of the problem is the large amount of "warnings" or bad news that have been issued over the years. While many were warranted, they were politicized (and still are) that numbed a lot of people due to the shrillness of both sides. Also we live in a NIMBY society. I sure don't want Mercury in my water, but what can I do about it? There such a sense of futility these days.

Peace...

40. I Still Hear His Voice...
People see things and wonder why...I see things and wonder, why not.

Powerful words I hear regularly.

RFK was also very shy and uncomfortable in public...especially in interviews and on television. He got better when be became a Senator, but there was still that uncomfort...even in his last speech in LA.

The good thing about a place like DU, is I see many RFK accolytes around here. The dreams still live on. So why not.

Cheers!
