Bill Clinton slams Guantánamo Bay prison

NEW YORK - Bill Clinton has become the most prominent figure so far to add his voice to criticisms of the US prison camp at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the former president called for the camp, set up to hold suspected terrorists, to "be closed down or cleaned up".

Clinton needed to say that the rule of Constitutional law should be adhered to. Clinton makes this sound as if nice conditions and fair treatment is an adequate substitute for detaining people indefinitely in an indeterminate status for as long as George W. Bush desires.

That is what is fundamentally wrong with the situation. Torture and mistreatment adds injury to insult, and that is fundamentally wrong, but the object should be to define the status of the detainees according to national and international law. Avoiding that issue is tantamount to capitulation to the tyranny of the Bush administration.
