Fish. Barrel. Boom. (my take on Bush's speech today)

Fish. Barrel. Boom.
By William Rivers Pitt
Wednesday 24 September 2003

"That's the spirit, George. If nothing else works, then a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through."

- General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett, ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’

There is not enough grammar in the entirety of the English language to describe the incredible international humiliation that has befallen the United States of America. That this humiliation was brought down upon the American people by the man supposedly in charge of the country is, in all honesty, no big surprise for those who have been watching this all unfold. The layers of crushing embarrassment have been building like river sediment for months upon months upon months. On Tuesday, however, George W. Bush managed to completely obliterate the hard-won standing the United States has earned within the global community.

Never mind that the Iraqi seat was filled at the United Nations by none other than the crawling kingsnake himself, Ahmad Chalabi. Chalabi has been cheerleading for war in Iraq for years, and became boon companions of Donald Rumsfeld and the other neocon hawks who cobbled the war together with a tapestry of lies and fear-mongering. Chalabi was convicted of 32 counts of bank fraud and sentenced to 22 years imprisonment by a Jordanian court in 1992, and yet this hand-picked sock puppet was George W. Bush’s chosen exemplar of a free and democratic Iraq. If you want to know one big reason why the mainstream media reported so long and so erroneously about Iraq’s weapons capabilities, look to Chalabi, who was the main source for New York Times reporter Judy Miller’s horribly inaccurate reporting on the matter. Where the Times goes, the others will follow. Thank you, Ahmad. I hope the chair is comfortable. You are no more deserving of its accommodation than the vile people who occupied it before you.

Never mind that the entire United Nations may as well not have shown up in the first place. The pitch and tenor of Bush’s speech was not aimed at that body. It was directed at the mainstream American media, whose reporting on these matters has been about as sharp as a sack of wet mice. Yet even to that tone-deaf receiver, Bush failed to complete the pass. He meandered off into a free-association rant about sex slaves, somehow forgetting that his own citizens were waiting to hear how he was going to get them out of the mess he so brazenly threw them in to. Certainly, the matter of international slavery in the 21st century is of deadly importance, but what connection it has to the blood-and-guts catastrophe unfolding in the Middle East is still hovering somewhere in space.

Never mind that in the first ten words of his speech, George W. Bush once again tried to connect the nation of Iraq to the attacks of September 11th. He failed to explain how a nation under near-total occupation before the war, crushed by sanctions, devoid of weapons of any merit whatsoever, unable to even launch a fighter aircraft in their own airspace, and completely lacking in any connections to Osama bin Laden or al Qaeda, could have managed to challenge the most powerful nation on the face of the earth. These are mere details. Bush chose instead to hew close to the bones of our beloved dead, to use them again as an excuse and as cover for his terrible mistakes, lies and mismanagement. The Iraq-9/11 connection has been so thoroughly debunked that Bush himself was forced recently to publicly denounce it, while claiming shock that anyone would think he’d try to make such a connection. Yet there he stood before the judgment of the world, coughing up the same old hairball on their carpet.

Never mind the rank absurdity of it all. There is an old story of a French officer who, when thrown into an impossible battle, sent a communiqué to his commanders: “Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver. Situation excellent, I am attacking!” That sad chestnut was on display before the United Nations on Tuesday, with George W. Bush and the United States of America standing in for the officer. Bush was at the United Nations for one reason: He got his country into terrible trouble, in defiance of virtually the entire international community, and was forced to come begging for help. An ounce of contrition would have furthered the cause of actually helping to repair the devastation in Iraq. An ounce of contrition would have shown America to be the humble nation Bush promised us way back in 2000. An ounce of contrition would almost certainly have motivated the U.N. to leave aside wrangling, roll up its sleeves, and begin to repair the damage that has been done. That once was not offered, and the jut-jawed whipsaw President barefaced his way through what could have been the most hopeful moment the Iraqi people have seen in 100 years. Situation excellent, I am attacking.

Never mind the 26,000 liters of anthrax, the 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, the 500 tons of sarin and mustard gas and VX gas, the 30,000 munitions capable of deploying this red death, the mobile biological weapons labs, and the infamous ‘yellow-cake’ uranium from Niger, that has so fantastically failed to materialize. All of this is sitting on a White House web page called ‘Disarm Saddam Hussein.’ This was the argument, the reason for war. None of it exists in any coherent state. The administration’s own hired-gun weapons inspector, Dr. Kay, has been tearing through Iraq to find all of these horrors promised by Bush and the gang. His report, saying pointedly that the stuff isn’t there, was ready to be released on September 15th, but was promptly buried by the administration.

Never mind all that. It comes down to this.

Over the last 227 years, the United States of America went from a brawling, rebellious infant to the greatest democracy in the universe. This nation spent oceans of blood, sweat and tears to earn the respect of the world. Too often, it abused that respect by abusing the world, but always managed to regain its standing within the global community by the sheer force of its goodness, its ideals, and its willingness to help other nations in need. When the attacks of September 11th came, that global community responded to our essential goodness by embracing us with a passionate ferocity that has no precedent in the annals of human history. That standing is dust now, ground under the heels of a pack of ideological extremists who would wrap the world in flames if it profited them a few more ducats. The world sees this, and has seen it for some time now. The United Nations was used on Tuesday as a prop for a failing President’s Fox newsbite writ large. It is a shame and a scandal and a disaster beyond description that this great nation has fallen so very low.

A moment will come on January 20th, 2005. It will be cold in Washington D.C. A man who is not George W. Bush will raise his hand and swear and oath to preserve, protect and defend the United States of America. The words “So help me God” will be snatched by the wind and carried across seas and mountains to the furthest corner of the planet. When that happens, all of the Earth will be joined together in the deepest and most profound exhalation of relief. When that happens, George W. Bush will have become in his absence what he completely failed to be with his presence: A uniter.

73. I have a visceral reaction to him. And as they say when it's over...
That's ALL, folks!

Good post, Will! It reminded me of something I read yesterday in Al Franken's "Lies..." book - about Ol' Bar Bush.

After he encountered her in first class, on a flight somewhere, he'd tried to strike up a conversation and to amuse her - even though it was with a couple of anti-gop/bush jokes. She could have gone along with the gag like the game old lady she's portrayed as being. She could have laughed as Bill and Hill always did when comedians did jokes about them, and at their expense. But she was rather rude, actually, and dismissed him curtly and coldly, not once but several times with "I told you. I'm through with you." And it occured to me that, if I was facing her now, I'd sweetly respond "well, mrs. bush, I think you'll probably find that, come November of 2004, most of the United States of America will decide it's through with you, too."

It's just a matter of semantics but I think it might be more effective to personalize it by referring to the "neocons" by name - which I see you did in the article - rather than PNAC, which is less definable in the minds of readers? Perhaps it doesn't make a difference?

30. Regarding David Kay
It would be more likely that Kay's report and subsequent pulling from release is still meant to trap leading presidential democrats in statements about how the president was tricking the american public.

This strategy seems more logical with a re-election campaign solely supported by fighting terror.

I think they know where and when they will find WMD's and Kennedy's statement about this war being "cooked up in texas" is a statement made to expedite the finding of WMD's before next year.

There is a sense that once approval numbers go below 45% the bump of an engineered event might not be big enough. Kennedy's strategy might be to drive approval numbers low enough to prevent a recovery above 50%.

Should the leading democrat be foolish enough to make claims that WMD's do not exist, the bait will have captured the television ad necessary for "W"s re-selection. "W" saved the world from a bad situation and the Democrat candidate wouldn't have.

100. Dead on, Will. The sex slave thing is to hold on to the fundamentalists
who just go out of their minds over any sexual issue. Gay rights issues will be used by these petro-Nazis to keep their religiously conservative core in hot outrage so they don't slip out of the flag'n'bible box by noticing the enormity of W's war crimes. He's appealing to the same non-thinkers who would have helped pay for Ashcroft's naked statue drapes.

11. Well now, well said Will.
It comes down to this, All those Pubs and speechmaker minions had to go on was distortion and distraction... nothing more. Pathetic speech for the American people to hear much less the august UN Assembly. This Bush has been the erupting boil of a festering wound called Compassionate Conservatism. He is the symptom of a Cancer no less on the World and its future.

That Cancer is the Republican Party who up till a few years ago, had some degree of credibility. No Longer. That the Pub Party is using Pysops, brain washing, bribery, etc to futher their greedy agenda is now coming to the attention of the many citizens who finally drank some strong coffee and used Visine in copious amounts.

Bush is a Uniter alright, he is uniting those with Reason and Sanity to over come the Delusion that personifies the Pub Party of late. Sad.

Its time for those Girls to return, Lets welcome Sanity, Common Sense, Reason, and logic back to the fold.

Its a good thing we had the light on for them to find us.

Come, we light the bon fire for the rest of America to find us.

I'll be sending this out to most of my address book. Just two comment: "Ounce" is misspelled as "once" (darned sticky keys!) and the last paragraph states that a MAN will raise his hand to take the oath; now, I think Mosley Braun's chances are slim to nil, but to be fair to her followers, I would consider changing "man" to "American".

"Because a coalition of nations acted to defend the peace, and the credibility of the United Nations, Iraq is free".

Truly inspired writing.

These are my favorite lines:
When the attacks of September 11th came, that global community responded to our essential goodness by embracing us with a passionate ferocity that has no precedent in the annals of human history. That standing is dust now, ground under the heels of a pack of ideological extremists who would wrap the world in flames if it profited them a few more ducats.

and to make US the fall guys for his schemes. We all know the UN will completely deny ANY request bush makes and he knows it too. This of course puts the entire burden ON us and justifies his demand for the 87+ billion bucks.

AND, for the record, bush will indeed retain his seat on January 20th, 2005. Not honorably or with dignity, but again, through lying, cheating and theft.

That's how the GOP operates.

So I respectfully disagree with your positions there...

Good article but this section worries me.

"Over the last 227 years, the United States of America went from a brawling, rebellious infant to the greatest democracy in the universe."

Do you not think that's a little over the top? Rhetoric like that weakens your argument I think and to a non-American (such as me) it smacks of little more than arrogance.

I am aiming this at the American people. This isn't some self-congratulatory essay from a guy who's been yelling about this shit for years now. This is (I hope) a hard buttstroke across the temple for any and all Americans who think the shit that went down today was at all a good thing.

Being wildly proud of America is not something that belongs to the Republicans. Most Americans are wildly proud of America. Hold the essence of that pride up, hyperbolized as it may be, and shine it on George and the boys, and they wilt.

Americans are my target audience. I apologize if this sounds arrogant. I'm trying to be a sniper with this.

I sat down at 10:55 am to watch the speech and about three lines in, my power went out. I came back just a few minutes ago. (Bad storms, by the way, heading right for you!). How was the speech received? What was the jist of the commentary on it? Did he score with it? Is there any hope???

47. That cretin on CNN called it a 'bomb'
What's his face, the political analyst, basically panned the speech. I threw my television out the window after Chirac got finished, so I have no idea what the spinsters did with this. As far as the reception in the General Assembly went, the speech fell on them, in the words of Old Abe, "like a wet blanket." I've seen peppier funerals...which, sadly, this event was, of sorts.

A moment will come on January 20th, 2005. It will be cold in Washington D.C. A man who is not George
W. Bush will raise his hand and swear and oath to preserve, protect and defend the United States of
America. The words “So help me God” will be snatched by the wind and carried across seas and
mountains to the furthest corner of the planet. When that happens, all of the Earth will be joined

From your mouth to G-d's ears.

An ounce of contrition would have furthered the cause of actually helping to repair the devastation in Iraq.

Ah, but when has the U.S. ever showed an ounce of contrition about anything?

That once was not offered

52. You're not being fair to Bush's brilliance!
I have to say, this one particular bit is grossly unjust:

Quoting Will:

"He meandered off into a free-association rant about sex slaves, somehow forgetting that his own citizens were waiting to hear how he was going to get them out of the mess he so brazenly threw them in to. Certainly, the matter of international slavery in the 21st century is of deadly importance, but what connection it has to the blood-and-guts catastrophe unfolding in the Middle East is still hovering somewhere in space."

Oh but there IS a connection!

International slavery, sexual and otherwise, is made possible by the creation of enormous disparities between the standard of life in some parts of the world and the standard enjoyed in the first world--which means that a) a lot of people all over the world are so poor and desperate that they will do anything to survive and b) a lot of those same people are desperate to get the hell otu of their countries and into the industrialized world. That means that c) these people are easy prey for traffickers. And what CREATES these enormous disparities that make international slavery possible? How about WAR and INTENTIONAL UNDERDEVELOPMENT? How about bombing a country flat and then 'rebuilding' it in such a way as to render it economically and militarily dependent on the first world FOREVER?

George W. Bush, the international slave trade's most enthusiastic advocate since 1785.

So you see, Virginia, there IS a connection between international sex slavery and the current mess in Iraq...it's just not the one Bush would like us to be making.

:puke:

Seriously, thank you for the rant, Will, it spares me having to do my own. God DAMN!

:grr:

67. Another powerful piece, Will.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 04:25 PM by Dover
Bush has been the perfect antagonist in this madcap nightmare. We have projected all our demons upon him as he has done to Saddam and others. He has caused us such distress that it has shred our isolationist womb of indifference and forced us to examine ourselves and our own complicity as well as to take stock of our great gifts as a country and unique place within the global family. Bush is like the family drunk who has embarrassed us, shattered our respectability by allowing the family secrets to be aired publically and caused us to waken from our denials and get involved. Any good therapist will tell you that these problems must be worked on within the context of the entire family unit and its patterns. So, in that context, Bush has indeed been a uniter.

It might also be noted that our anger and frustration with the neocons stems in part from our assumption that they are attempting to win over the American public and our allies around the world (an assumed inclusiveness which is characteristic of any healthy democracy)...but that they continue to fail miserably and instead further alienate them.
But perhaps we could stop hitting our heads against that wall if we understood and accepted that they would consider such a negative reaction just further indication of their success. For instance, if global entities such as the UN are seen by some neocons as yet another regulatory and legal body then they are by that definition an obstacle to privatization and other primary neocon goals, and therefore must be dismantled.

Here is this excerpt from the article, Vision of the neocons stays fixed on making hard choices , by Oliver Burkeman in Washington, that appeared in the Guardian today:

In the interest both of American influence and the Iraqi people a much bigger commitment of US troops and money is essential, he (Wm. Kristol) argues. This is why the president's request for billions more in funds has spread some relief among the neocons. Some privately hint that they might prefer it if French and German opposition to Mr Bush at the UN were to result in the defeat of US negotiators there.

One prominent pro-war voice has even said so publicly. "It would be a delightful irony if Jacques Chirac prevented President Bush from putting the wrong foot forward," Reuel Marc Gerecht of the AEI wrote recently in the Weekly Standard.

And then there is the mindset which seems to be prevalent among the neocons -
Michael Ledeen, the "Freedom Fellow" of the American Enterprise Institute, the man who Carl Rove, known as "Bush's brains," identified as the only person he got foreign policy advice from, and a close ideological associate of PNAC (from his most recent book, The War Against the Terror Masters) states:

"Creative destruction is our middle name. Both within our society and abroad. We tear down the old order every day, from business to science, literature, art, architecture and cinema to politics and the law. Our enemies have always hated this whirlwind of energy and creativity, which menaces their traditions (whatever they may be) and shames them for their inability to keep pace. Seeing America undo traditional societies, they fear us, for they do not wish to be undone. They cannot feel secure so long as we are there, for our very existence - our existence, not our politics - threatens their legitimacy. They must attack us in order to survive, just as we must destroy them to advance our historic mission."

81. let us move forward
A typical Bush compromise - "help me do things my way."
I loved this piece Will, and the part about an ounce of contrition reminded me of one of my quotes. The quote is from Joseph Heller's "God Knows" as Saul's daughter speaks to David.

"I love you," she said in a clipped voice. "I hope you know that."
I could see that she did, but in the only way she knew how, with acrimony, injury, envy, and disdain, and with consummate selfishness and egocentricity.

Bush will be Bush and he loves America, Iraq and the world the only way he knows how. He's like the Terminator: "He can't be bargained with, he can't be reasoned with, he doesn't know fear, or pity, or remorse, and he absolutely will not stop ..." until somebody makes him.

NOT UNLESS WE GET THE VOTING MACHINES PROBLEM FIXED.

And not a minor quibble:
Thank you, Ahmad. I hope the chair is comfortable. You are no more deserving of its accommodation than the vile people who occupied it before you.

Iraq, you may remember, was a sovereign nation, even if run by a vicious dictator. For my money, Saddam Hussein's representatives had far more right to be there than Ahmad Chalabi could ever have.
