Michael Smith DID NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT destroy any originals!!!
He took PHOTOCOPIES of the originals and then RETURNED the originals to his source.

Then he worked off the photocopies and RETYPED them to protect his source. The originals were on UK government LETTERHEAD. If he used originals or photocopies, his source would be identified (DUUUHHH!)

Then he DESTROYED HIS ORIGINAL PHOTOCOPIES. Because they too showed the UK government LETTERHEAD...that's why they're called PHOTO COPIES...and would have revealed his source.

HE DID NOT DESTROY ANY ORIGINALS.

There are SEVERAL SETS of originals because SEVERAL MEMBERS of the UK government received the originals in the first place.

And added to that are these facts:

The Foreign Office yesterday acknowledged the documents were genuine"

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1308368,00.html

PM Blair: "And let me remind you that that memorandum was written before we then went to the United Nations..."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/06/20050607-2.html#

Not even a good try, rightwingnut freeping stupid morans! LEARN HOW TO READ and ya won't be dependant on Faux Moos' lying to ya.

19. Sooner or later, yep, as so many UK government people have originals.
I expect the UK government Labour Party member who showed his/her originals to Michael Smith didn't realize the American Taliwingnuts would be so incapable of any reasoning ability that they'd start screeching of "fakes". Especially after Blair, while standing next to bush, admitted the DSM was real.

3. Thanks... gotta spell it out really slowly for 'em.
I'm betting the cognitive dissonance won't let most even acknowledge what it means, let alone its veracity.

9. It's their reading comprehension disability.
Smith spoke about his having "destroyed the originals"...PHOTOCOPIES.

He destroyed his "original" PHOTOCOPIES because the photocopies ALSO showed the UK government letterhead which would have revealed his source.

But rightwingnuts, freeps especially, are vastly disabled in reading comprehension. That's why Faux Moos telly and Rush pigboy radio are their very favorite things; no need to read. (something they've in common with their bush-god.)

6. I bet the right wing wishes they hadn't blown their wad on the other memo.
All their screeching about these DSM documents being forgeries or whatever, it won't fly. The right wing raised such a stink about the National Guard memo that anyone involved in the DSM has been incredible meticulous in ensuring that there is no question about the authenticity of the DSM documents.

Take your medicine, right wing. We've been waiting a long time to give it to you.

14. I still don't understand why he didn't simply redact
Anything that would identify which copy he saw, copy that copy, then destroy the "original" copy. They've been authenticated now, but it would have saved a lot of crap from Wingnuttia (my name for the Red States).

17. I read about the originals
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 03:19 PM by DemReadingDU
in my Sunday newspaper. It said Smith typed copies of the originals on plain paper, and the originals were destroyed. I thought it was so odd...in this technological society, why would anyone manually type them when photocopying is so widespread. Then if there are photocopies, there would be no need to destroy the originals.

Edit to add: that the copies had to be retyped to protect the identity of the source.

59. "legal desk secretary typed the text up on an old fashioned typewriter."

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Backstory_Confirming_the_ ...

.......

The Butler Committee, a UK commission looking into WMD, has quoted the documents and accepted their authenticity, along with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. Smith said all originals were destroyed in order to both protect the source and the journalist alike. “It was these photocopies that I worked on, destroying them shortly before we went to press on Sept 17, 2004,” he added. “Before we destroyed them the legal desk secretary typed the text up on an old fashioned typewriter.”

The copying and re-typing were necessary because markings on the originals might have identified his source, Smith said.......

27. Read rodeo's linked excerpt carefully;
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 06:18 PM by LynnTheDem
Smith is referring to the ORIGINAL PHOTOCOPIES. If you read rodeo's linked source, it says Smith returned the original documents to his source. Then it goes on to say:

Smith said all originals were destroyed in order to both protect the source and the journalist alike. “It was these photocopies that I worked on, destroying them shortly before we went to press on Sept 17, 2004,” he added. “Before we destroyed them the legal desk secretary typed the text up on an old fashioned typewriter.

But email Michael Smith for clarification if you like; he's very good at replying. :)

26. Smith is talking about his original PHOTOCOPIES.
He destroyed the ORIGINAL PHOTOCOPIES he made from the actual original documents, because the PHOTOCOPIES would reveal his source.

Mr. Smith did exactly the right thing. Now they don't know his source, and they can't cover it up/deny it.
