My lifelong Republican Grandma is now a Democrat!
Wow...my grandma, at her advanced age of 81, has changed her party registration to Dem, after an entire life of Reublicanism. She's fed up with the militarism, the assault on the elderly, air quality, etc. This is a huge move for her, and it means a lot to me. I think I'll send her flowers! She calls Bush a 'blasphemous bastard'! heehee :P

6. The GOP isn't so grand anymore
As one of the lifelong republicans who has found myself unable to support them anymore I can tell you it's a bit of a shock when all of a sudden one day you realize that the grand ol' party isn't so grand anymore, and that you can't trust one word said by virtually all of them.

Waking up a democrat is a life changing experience

13. Honestly I'm not sure...
when it happened.

I grew up in a republican house (though by demographic we should have been democrats I suppose), watched my family tie in to the evangelical movement in the 70s, did my duty in the 80s in the Army infantry. By the time I got out in 89 it was already starting to sway I guess. Having been force fed the hypocracies of the evangelical movement since age 10, I broke from it clean and am the families "black sheep". Once that no longer clouds the vision, it's pretty easy to see through the lies and deceptions.

32. welcome to DU
and thanks for sharing that sentiment.

A good friend I grew up with has lived in Germany through the entire Bush administration. On the phone she said that she had a friend who was trying to read all that she could to try to understand what the American public was thinking. I assured my friend - that many of us here - have been wondering the same thing - just so surreal, this political era.

15. Wahoo! Feels really good when that happens doesn't it? :-)
Quodos to your Grandmother! :)

Many in my family have at least stopped voting "Republican" and are strongly endorsing mostly Dems now.

My husband is an X-Republican (although he was leaning left by the time we met). After all the Clinton BS he became the first one (at least on his fathers side) to change his registration from Republican since LINCOLN (most of his fathers side were VERY active Repub.. there was old campaign stuff from Lincoln, Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, etc in the old family attic). Except for a very few he's pretty thoroughly disgusted with the whole party now.

My 83 yr old (retired accountant) father who was a Republican sure doesn't sound like one now. Niether he nor my Step-mom can stand Bush and he'll happily launch into one of his tangents about the Repub in the House and Senate, the budget, SS, tax breaks when the deficit is so large, etc... although I have't asked him if he's changed his registration yet.

My eldest daughter (27) was floored to learn that her previously very Republican (retired Cop) Grandfather couldn't stand Bush and wasn't going to vote for him or any Republicans in 2004. When I saw him at my youngest DD's wedding last Sept he told me he wasn't going to vote for someone who so obviously had his head up his *ss (he always was a plain talker although more so with a drink or 5) (for the record I am happy to report I raised both my DDs right... they're both wonderful, intelligent and open minded Dems.) :)

Sadly my step-sibs are Repub moderates that LIKE Bush or did last Holiday season. It sure made for some tense moments at the dinner table. ::sigh:: They're not truly stupid people either... not normally.. but they're buying this crap hook line and stinker. Hopfully by this holiday season they'll have come to their senses or I'll have to bring lots of anti-acid, Kava Kava and remember not to bite too hard on my tongue. :banghead:

40. My family is also mostly republican
and I'm the only democrat I know of. My grandparents voted for Kerry/Edwards last year as well. My grandmother told my Mom "we have to get Bush out" and I was surprised. My grandfather was in the navy and is an elder at his church and thinks Bush is a total moron. My mother used to be a republican as well and this last April she told our now mayor that she left the republican party (the mayor is an independent). My dad is still a republican and all that but I have gotten him to watch the Daily show. ;)

17. I've been converted too!! I was a repub until Bush started the
Iraq war. That's when I knew the media was f*cked up. Not a dissenting view...not a single one...regarding the most significant foreign policy changes in our history. How could anyone see this as less than imperialism? Not one news guy could point out that we fought Hitler and Hirohito over their militaristic imperialism. Now we're doing the same!!

That's when it started for me....but with time, I became more and more entrenched in my opposition. I've read many books on politics and I'm convinced that we're on the verge of a theocratic fascist state. All true patriots, regardless of their party, should be opposed. Its only a question of who has caught on.

29. Love your post Trish - heartfelt!
Actually,an analysis of news coverage during the run up to the Iraq war found that TWO (2) guests featured in over 300 interviews about the war spoke agains the war. So, to be completely fair -- we can't say "not a single one".

20. We should send the old people out there in force.
I've TOTALLY clued my mother in and she "shares" with her church ladies now.

My SO's parents are TOTALLY anti-Bush.

The old people get it. They need to be sent out en masse with fliers, etc.

The old people in Palm Beach, Florida were really out there getting out the vote this year.

Let's give them the Downing Street Memo project! They'll hand out fliers, etc.

Our seniors are so damn SMART! They know which way's up. They know a lie when they hear it. They know corruption when they see it. Here's to grandma! She DESERVES flowers! :toast:

When my dad heard about what Bush was trying to do to Social Security, he said, (he passed away last month so I feel pretty safe saying this here since the secret service can't go after him anymore)

He said, "I wish someone would assassinate that son of a bitch!" :7 He was 79 years old. They are NOT as stupid as the repukes like to think they are. They know what's going on!

Give your grandma a big old hug and kiss for me!

38. There was an 81-year-old guy who volunteered for Dean
during the primaries, who had never been politically active before in his life. Not a conversion from R to D, but definitely a wake-up to activism. He's one of the people profiled in this movie: www.takeitbackfilm.com - and I am proud to say i got to meet him at DemFest this weekend in Austin TX. Extraordinary soul.

God bless your grandma and ALL of the seniors who care what kind of country they leave to the rest of us! :patriot:

He just told me I was right all along, that the Dems are much better for the economy (his main thing) and FAR better on not getting us in wars and shit. He has a 22 year old son (he got married early) and is asking me what I will do with my daughter if they have the draft. We have family in Canada, and Kathleen is going north fast if they put in the draft. Which I bet they will. Smirky cums like a racehorse when people die. Death, lots of it, follows that fucking punk around. At least we h have proven anyone CAN grow up to be president; rich sociopaths seem to have no problem.
