For the record: JFK never said he was a jelly donut.
http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/cs/historical/a/jfk_berliner.htm

"The story goes that he should have said "Ich bin Berliner" ("I am a citizen of Berlin"), and that "Ich bin ein Berliner" really means "I am a jelly doughnut." (A "Berliner" is in fact a type of jelly doughnut made in Berlin.)"

"...if President Kennedy had said "Ich bin Berliner," he would have sounded silly because with his heavy accent he couldn't possibly have come from Berlin. But by saying "Ich bin ein Berliner," he actually said "I am one with the people of Berlin.""

Just one of my pet peeve stories. I heard it again today, so I wanted to post this.

Being a German, I at first didn't even get the joke when this was mentioned in a movie. I mean that I would have never thought about being incorrect or something like that. And neither do I believe that any other German even thought about the "jelly doughnut". It rather sounded as a means to stress what he wanted to say. Infact, "Ich bin ein Berliner" sounds way better.

2. He could have said
"I'm an upside-down teapot" and it wouldn't have mattered. They loved him. He was beloved around the world. So unlike this excuse for a president** we have now.
