Got a call from NARAL saying Renquist will retire 6/30 -suspicious

They wanted a contribution to fight the new nominee, whoever that will be. I have contributed before and ususally a woman called. I checked all the news, and there is no mention of this--I think it would be big news!

Anyhow, I cancelled my credit card, and asked for a new number. Do you think I was scammed and it was an identity theft attempt?

5. Offices closed, so I left a voice mail. I was suspicious because

I thought I just read something on the net yesterday that said that Rehnquist wasn't likely to retire right away.

It was abut 4:40 PM when I called and I guess they had left for the day.
I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see if they return my call, and I'll post something then.

4. perhaps not

I've seen something of the kind mentioned in the past day or two, iirc on dKos. Entitled something like 'Sides prepare for fight over Supreme Court' and talk of there being nearly $40 or $50 million being put aside for it.

There was a trial balloon. The expected date was June 27. But apparently Rehnquist has gotten substantially healthier in the past couple of months, according to Washington gossip, and it's hard to see him letting go at this point. It seems unlikely it will actually happen.

That organizations would fundraise on the mere rumor seems a bit of a stretch to me, but I have no experience with NARAL.

6. I never, ever

give my credit card number to someone on the phone, no matter who they say they are. Ever. I ask them to send me the information in the mail and then if I want to contribute I will send a check.
