The “Downing Street Memo” could be the last straw, or the spark that lights a fire, for an American public fed up with the Iraq war.

As incriminating documents continue to be revealed showing the Bush administration lied to take the U.S. to war, and as the U.S. death toll in Iraq topped 1,700, more than half a million Americans have signed a letter initiated by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) demanding that President Bush answer charges his administration “fixed” intelligence to sell the war. “We’re now 540,000 and counting,” Conyers said in his blog June 13. The secret memo, published May 1 by the Times of London, reports minutes of a July 23, 2002, meeting of top British officials including Prime Minister Tony Blair. According to the memo, the head of Britain’s intelligence agency, just back from meetings in Washington, reported that “the intelligence and facts were being fixed” to justify Bush’s determination to attack Iraq.

1. If there actually were an opposition party inside the beltway,

such as you hope might actually come to pass, but lacking anything but the pink tutu Dems to pose as the opposition, chimpie has until January 20, 2009 to do damn near whatever he wants. And now that the Dems have folded, even though Dick Durbin told the truth, look for chimpie to be much more emboldened.

2. This Is *'s Pentagon Papers

These were official documents that showed the Pentagon was lying about Vietnam and how they decived Congress in passing the Gulf Of Tonkin resolution. Those papers came out after Johnson left office, so it's not known if it would have led to any impeachement (some say it would have), and it would eventually lead to Nixon's downfall...but in a different way. In his zeal to discredit his critics, Nixon approved the break-in of Daniel Elsburg (the person who released the papers) pyschiatrist office by the same goons who went into the Watergate.

Honestly, there's no parallel to an American government ever pre-meditating war and doing it. We still have no real understanding as to how bad this war is and how corrupt things have been and are going. This is truly going to be a long, painful slog.
