Combat veteran supports Senator Durbin's original statment
June 22, 2005 edition of the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper

http://www.startribune.com/stories/563/5469160.html

Forced to engage in torture

Being a member of the Minnesota Republican Party, this is hard to write, but being a combat veteran requires me to. I would like to thank Sen. Dick Durbin for having the courage to stand up and demand that we close our prison in Guantanamo Bay.

Now that Colin Powell has left, there is no one in a leadership position in the Bush administration who has seen combat. If they had, they would realize the lifetime of psychological trauma that is inflicted on our troops when they are required to chain prisoners to the floor -- leaving them in that position so long that they urinate and defecate on themselves. FBI reports tell how some prisoners left in that way have pulled their own hair out.

Years from now, American Marines, who volunteered to defend our country, will still be going to counseling, trying to get rid of the guilt of knowing that they were forced to engage in torture.

James P. Glaser, Northome, Minn.;

commander,

American Legion Post 499.

1. James P. Glaser, true patriot and American hero. It takes guts to speak
out now days, anyone who does is taking a risk. Not only with the safety but with their job security, the possiblity of psycho nutcase fundies showing up at thier house with homemade signs full of bad English and misspellings, or having their families harrassed.

Thank you Mr. Glaser.

14. Commander Glaser, you are a Brave Patriot.
Funny, we were talking at work today that you'd think SOMEONE dealing with Defense in this administration would have SOME kind of military experience.

I salute you, sir.

26. your great response to this man
touches on why i will defend Mr.Durbins apology till i die-

This soldier did what he did because of Bush's shitty policies-
Mr. Durbin didn't want to demonize the average soldier, who is just honoring their promise to serve- (something bush DID'nt do)-

Why we Democrats are turning on Sen.Durbin for being a man of honor himself bothers me more than the republican hyprocricy--

Are we just anti- everything at heart??? maybe i'm in the wrong 'party'-

i agree, Glaser has class- and i admire him, as i do Sen. Durbin-

Thanks for your insight

That the people doing the torture will be twisted individuals afterwards - who will help them?

19. Bravo
The gulogs should be brought up to standards of decency. Durbin is right and he shouldn't have felt it necessary to apologize for the nazi-like tortures going on at the US animal holding pens.

25. What happens to torturers
can be seen in an anecdote form Khruschev during de-Stalinization. They tried psychiatrists and everything and simply decided to put these incurable sociopaths out of their misery. Apparently is does get so bad that the last victims are the tormentors. Releasing them into normal society would be disastrous for everyone.
