The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's FY2005 budget is $696 million. Department of Homeland Security's budget is $36.5 billion. So, for a threat that's nearly 15 times as large, we're spending 2% of the money.

Just an interesting factoid my friend sent my way today. I find this stuff amazing, especially (being the space buff that I am) that we've spent more on the Iraq War than we did in all the Apollo moon landing missions combined (and adjusted for inflation).

The money being chucked around these days is freaking astonishing. And they just approved another what, $45 billion for Iraq? Our tax dollars are like a magical money tree to these idiots.

2. Amazing how the neocons will give our money away like this and
then if we want to use it at home for projects we wasting it by helping those 'lazy poor people'. Help iraqi's and big companies - a ok, help a fellow american down on their luck or health, bad.

Makes no damn sense.

3. Not to mention that Iraq has not one thing to do with 9-11.

4. You're forgetting one thing.
Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11.

Iraq is about oil, about expansionism, and about global U.S. dominance.

The illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq was in the works before 9/11 -- and that terrible day was just an excuse to whip the proletariat into an emotional frenzy that was usable.

5. Indeed, I fully understand there's no connection.
I'm merely using the same 9/11=Iraq rationale they use (Devil's Advocate) and it still makes no sense.

6. that's because alot of the money isn't going to Iraq
but into the coffers of Halliburton, Bechtel, Carlyle, etc.

it's their golden goose.

7. I hear you.
But "sense" from the reTHUGs is something you'll just have to quit looking for or you'll drive yourself crazy trying.

There's just no such thing.

8. But Chimpy said just last week that we are at war with Iraq because
"we were attacked."
He's STILL LYING about it. And still denying he ever lied about it.
How're those articles of impeachment coming along, again?

9. 18,000 die in America each year because it is too expensive to
afford them healthcare. But at least we got rid of Saddam and his socialized medical program.

10. Does anybody have a nice round dollar figure...
...for how much it would cost annually to give every American complete health coverage (assume the same plan the U.S. Congress gets I guess and multiply it by the population).

If my guess is right, this war could have bought all of us excellent health care for a very long time.

11. The odds of dying in a transportation accident in the U.S. in one
year are about 1 in 5,000. The odds of a terrorist attack are too slim to calculate. America, The Land of the Phobics. We are acting more like field mice than adult humans. The ultimate low was when people were taping up their houses with duct tape. Has the Country gone bug nuts?

12. Americans are mathmatically challenged.
Or to put it bluntly; we are idiots when it comes to assesing the meaning of numbers larger than 20 or more complicated than addition.

Some basic American math fallacies:

We can borrow 6 percent of our income every year.

Lotteries are a worthy investment.

Casinos represent economic development.

Welfare costs more than the military.

Kids are more threatened by kidnappers than bicycling accidents.

Buying stuff on sale is "saving."

You can mortgage 100% of the equity in your house and still be a homeowner.

We could go on and on.
