the bushco economic miracle rolls on! Winn-Dixie to close 35 percent of
its stores.

SNIP>>>
All told, the company said it will shutter 326 of its 913 stores in the coming months and will trim 22,000 of 78,000 positions. It will cease operations in four states - Tennessee, Virginia and North and South Carolina - and will trim operations in its five remaining states. Those are Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. It also has stores in the Bahamas.

The company said it will try to find buyers for the closing stores and ask the new owners to retain as many employees as possible.

1. Winn-Dixie got skunked by its competitors. Here in FL
I've never been to a Winn-Dixie store that wasn't dirty and poorly lit. It's like going into a Hardee's.

4. well, there's that too.
the company was poorly run, but the big wheels will still get their millions, and the workers get fucked.

6. I grew up in Miami, am now in Orlando...
...so I've always been surrounded by Winn-Dixies, and I concur that every single last one of them is disgusting.

They tried about 15 years ago to do that upscale "Marketplace" thing, which worked for about three months until the stores devolved back into dumps.

Walk into a Winn-Dixie, then walk into a Publix. There's no freaking comparison. I'll gladly pay more to shop at Publix, plus I don't need to have a "discount card" that keeps track of all my shopping habits.

7. That depends on your definition of 'throes'
recessioanl throes are quite different from insurgency throes.

All I know is, all this throes talk from Dickie and georgie and Karlee, and Scottee makes me wanna throe up.

8. I went to a Winn Dixie for the first time in over 10 years last week.
Assorted bell peppers: $5 per pound.
High prices don't justify the quality (or lack of) their stores.
I remember awhile back they tried to upmarket their image. It failed.
