10. That's a DUer.
She flew from San Francisco with her one year old to be there. Cut her some slack. Breast feeding a baby when you have to isn't a crime. I didn't see any breast there. "Desperate Housewives" shows a lot more.

36. Wouldn't screaming baby have been a bigger distraction.
Anything that mother could have done other than to feed the baby would have been a distraction. The room was so small that even leaving would have been a distraction and what a shame that would have been after flying coast to coast to be there.

55. So she could have exited the room for feeding the baby
Several weeks ago we've had here a whole thread about breast feeding in public about it being "natural and healthy" and some of us thought, still think, that so are intercourse and giving birth but no one is doing this in public.

56. Maybe because there was no way to exit the room easily !
Maybe it was because the hallway outside of the hearing room was packed and crowded, there were no places to sit, no bathroom nearby, only boiler rooms and janitorial closets and she had been traveling all night long with her child clear across the country and had been waiting outside for nearly an hour and her child was tired and hungry?

Maybe because there were some very valid reasons....

62. If the room was packed, then one more person, or two,
would not have made a difference.

Sometimes we need to show up to increase the mass but, obviously, there was no need in this case. She should not have planted herself right behind a speaker... could have taken a back seat. Yes, she had a choice. No doubt these seats were the first to be taken. At the very least, she could have covered herself with a light cloth. Many nursing women do this.

The bottom line is, while a nursing mother think that her breast is the most beautiful thing in the world, most of us do not and I don't see why she thinks that her views should prevail. Nursing women claim that they should not be forced to stay at home... true, but being stuck in a stuffy, packed room is really not the only alternative, certainly not the healthiest atmosphere for a baby with so many coughing, sneezing, etc. A very selfish behavior, when it comes down to it

67. Sorry, I don't buy it. Think the event was used as an opportunity
to push an agenda of breastfeeding in public. Carry over from the whole Barbara Walters dust up a couple of weeks back. Very admirable that the mother traveled a great distance to attend the hearing but she showed an incredible lack of judgment and respect for the Congress people, the witnesses and the audience. She gave - gave the media an excuse to ridicule the entire event. Are people stupid about this issue? Of course, but pick your battles and don't kill others in your quest to make a point.

Baby hungry, step outside, child comes first but there were ways to feed a child without ENSURING you have a national audience (she KNEW she was in front of the cameras). I am not shocked or offended by a mother breastfeeding her child in public BUT this event was already suffering of the perceived "wackiness" of illegitimacy by the re pugs. Just those weird Dem's at it again. Confers, et al were there to be taken seriously but they suffered from a terrible basement venue and less than perfect audio and video equipment. They had important and serious issues, heavy weight speakers to try and get vital information before the public and then see their work become a 10-second joke for people who are already so uptight they creak when they walk. No matter what your position on breastfeeding it was neither the time nor the place to jeopardize the legacy of the hearing.

Terrible timing and lack of respect. Flame away.

71. Oh, yeah, I always thought of my breastfeeding agenda!
I breastfed both of mine long-term (four and a half years total), and whenever I needed to nurse mine, the very first thing on my mind was the breastfeeding, feminazi agenda. :eyes: I never thought of keeping my child quiet and fed appropriately or anything. Nope. It was all to undermine what was going on and to force everyone to accept breastfeeding in public.

:sarcasm:

Honestly--she probably didn't think much beyond making sure that she had a good nursing outfit on that would ensure no one actually seeing anything. She had a baby who needed to nurse, and she nursed him. End of story. If it really bothers you that much, it tells me more about you than it does about her.

Of course it gave ammo to the opposition: so did the lights turning off and the crappy mikes. Are you going to rant and rave about those, too? Oh--you mentioned them but were more upset about a woman feeding her baby. :eyes:

Lack of respect is what you're showing by getting all upset about a woman feeding her baby rather than have a screaming kid. Her baby was too young to leave alone with anyone else, and she needed to be there. Get over it.

57. Why Bring a Baby To A Hearing?
Isn't that a little inappropriate and a little disrespectful of the procedings? Babies do cry and do get hungry - yes, so keeping that in mind, it might be a good idea to keep them where they might not be a distraction from an important hearing.

59. What Did He Expect A Baby To Get Out Of The Hearing?
I seriously doubt the baby was expected to attend; I suspect a sitter could not be found or the mother did not fully consider that her infant might cause a distraction to the importance of what was being discussed.

If he did expect a baby to attend, well - what did he expect the infant to get out of the experience, I wonder?

there was absolutely no breast to be seen. The camera was on the witness testifying and for under ten seconds panned to her and then away.

It never ceases to amaze me about the constant sexualization of breasts and particularly mothers nursing in this country. She was feeding her child and quieting the baby. Nothing sexual about that. And why, why would your first assumption about Swamp Rat's father in his 70's was to assume he wanted a burlesque peep show? Maybe his Dad find's the act of a mother feeding her child and comforting it a beautiful and gentle thing? :eyes:

72. The baby was too young for a sitter.
The hearing was going to go on too long for a sitter, she needed to fly across the country and couldn't leave her nursing baby without her that long, and the baby wasn't a distraction.

Sheesh! It's just nursing, for pete's sake! It's not like she started doing a strip-tease or anything. She wore an appropriate outfit and showed nothing while keeping her baby fed and happy. What's wrong with that?

It just bothers you because the opposition is making hay with it? So what? They'd find anything and everything to make fun of rather than take it seriously.

66. The breastfeeding woman called in on Randi Rhodes
I heard her call - she said she was breastfeeding in the room because the alternative was to have a very noisy baby.

Which is worse? Having a baby making lots of hungry fussy noise in the background, or having a baby silently breastfeeding?

I think it shows poor judgment on the media's part to have filmed it. If the baby had been noisy, I imagine they would have done what they could to keep the noise off the audio. But apparently a breastfeeding baby makes good political television.

She didn't say on the radiom, and Randi gave her a healthy dose of "WTF were you thinking.

Because I didn't see the clip on tv (don't have one) I won't dare to push my opinion on the matter any further.

I do think it's kind of screwy to fly across the country to attend a congressional hearing but bring your infant child to it. I think it shows a lack of respect for the formality of the institution.

As I was laughing myself sick last night, watching Jon Stewart's rendition of "Bush describing his lunch", I realized that he's got a much more accurate take on Bush's mannerisms (including the shifty eyes and the smirk) than most of the impressionists out there today.

The guy on Leno's show (who only looks like Bush because of the wig and prosthetic makeup he uses) is okay with the accent, but he's either unwilling or unable to incorporate the petty, self-satisfied side of Dubya -- at least not to the extent that's evident in clips like the "piece of work" moment. Jon Stewart, and possibly Will Ferrell, capture Bush's persona much more realistically.

64. Yoakum was dreadful
If he was from the Mammas and Pappas I would have said he used too much LSD in the 1960s.

That was a great show last night, though.

28. More people will remember the whole thing because apparently
a lot Americans can only pay attention if there's sex involved. So you get the nutrition with the sex.

As for breast feeding in public - who cares! And it was great she flew all the way accross the country for it!

33. I liked him pointing out Bush laughing at the expense of our troops
Don't forget Dean is on Thursday and Bill Moyers will be on tomorrow.

Two of my favorite liberal guests!! I know we'll have to suffer about 30 rightwing book whore to make up for it, but DEAN ON THE DAILY SHOW!!! HELL YEAH!!!

37. Don't take stuff so seriously
if we can't laugh at ourselves, we're doomed.

It's a comedy show anyway, they won't talk about the DSM seriously unless John Conyers himself goes on as a guest (which isn't a bad idea....where's the daily show's email?)

50. so did we...
My 17yo son cracked up over "Primesident Blush."

My son quipped, "Huh - it's The BlairBush Project" after we heard the report from the IAEA
(late summer 2002) on Pacifica Radio denying BlairBush's allegations of WMD's...

I remember my disappointment when Craig Kilborne left the Daily Show and Jon Stewart
took over - but I had no idea of the immense improvement yet to come.
I :loveya: Jon.

52. that statement intercutting Bush and Blair was just priceless!
The scary thing is that it really did seem to be one person making it, if you closed your eyes.
