Mother, daughter protest textbook in southeast Pennsylvania (Creationism)

Ladies and gentlemen, they have brought the fight here. :) I guess they missed the part where it says "One Nation Under God", not "One Nation Under OUR God". Check out these excerpts, then go to the link above and use the "Voice Your Opinion" option. (Those familiar with these posts know that the opinions don't show up immediately.)

EAST WHITELAND -- The Great Valley School District found itself smack in the middle of the evolution/creationism debate Monday after a parent requested that a textbook stop being used because it teaches evolution.

A unanimous vote to retain the textbook upholds a recommendation from a committee made up of district educators, administrators, parents and students.

<snip>

"In this case the parent just objected to the mention of evolution because it is contrary to their religious beliefs ..so they wanted the textbook removed because it talked about evolution," Pettiss said in an interview Tuesday, following the vote.

<snip>

However, in describing its contents, Pettiss said the letter stated that the parent and her daughter "believe solely in creationism (as) the formation of the Earth" and that the textbook material "opposes what we believe."

"This material is undermining our Christian foundation and belief system ..this material is untrue," Pettiss quoted the letter as saying. "Parts are fine or OK if not taught from the standpoint that they support Darwin’s theory. I can’t think of anything to recommend unless the school were to teach creationism."

5. Calendar date...June 22 2005; RWer delusional date: June 22 1005
These hard right dingbats are not going to be happy until the feudal system is restored, the de facto government is FundiVangelial, and we are all fighting endless "crusades" in the Middle East for bits of the true cross. I honestly think that people like mom and daughter here would do any and everything President Mr. Peepers told them to.

2. Good grief! It's like the killer bees, or rabies cases, getting closer to
where I live! This is the Philadelphia area! East Whiteland township is an upscale area, too, if I'm not mistaken. I am seriously spooked.

3. This is the Fundie definition of "persecution" (of "Christians")
"Exposure to anything contrary to our teachings equals persecution of us"

6. Ms Pettiss, if this can undermine your "Christian foundation" then
I'd say your foundation is not very solid.

8. Pettiss isn't the parent...she's the board president.
I knew I should have cut that part out. :)

9. Saw a Great Bumper Sticker Once
It was simple black and white like the billboard messages (supposedly written by god) you see sometimes on the road. Now why god would think he had to put his message on a tacky billboard outside the I-95 Denny's is beyond me, but that a different topic.

The bumper sticker said;

"If I want to be in the Public Schools, I'll get there myself" - God

7. Dayum.
Did they all get a memo or something? These kind of people used to satisfy their moral superiority complex by pulling their kids out of public school and teaching them at home. That doesn't seem to be enough anymore, as cases like this are popping up all over the country.

12. To all concerned creationists:
"Ok, have it your way. I evolved, you didn't" (I know it's a cliche)

14. *Sigh* Another child that won't get a proper education,
And who could very well become a burden on society when she grows up.

You've got to have evolution down if you're going to study any of the biological science, along with such scientific pursuits like archaelology, anthropology, genetics, etc. etc.

This is absolutely shameful.

15. Something I don't get
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 12:32 PM by FreedomAngel82
with these Creation people. I'm a Christian and I love science (my grandfather is an elder and he worked at NASA). I love to see what God has done and what he's about and creating the universe. It helps my beliefs become stronger and figure everything out. I love mystery's and figuring things out. The people who are against science are so unsure of their faith I think. They don't like challenging themselves and their faith. They're so insecure with themselves. Why not challenge yourself and look at other view points? One of my new favorite quotes is from James Roosevelt at the anti-private account rally for SS. He said "is it going to be I and me all the time or is it going to be 'we'?"

17. These loony bins are going to prove to be our best weapon
They defy common sense and believe it or not the majority of Americans are not this insane. It is one thing to support a political party or President but quite another to support such religious ferver.
