How Many Flag Burnings Occur In The U. S. Every Year?
I am just wondering why this is such a hot issue as I can't remember when I saw a flag burning in this country....

1. The only ones I ever remember are those they show as propaganda
on the state controlled media of protesters in some other land burning the flag.
Although I did see them burn one on the Daily Show the other night. Part of the story about Flag Burning and it was a small one that I ma sure doesn't count.

5. The one on The Daily Show was a "pretend accident"
Rob Cordry was holding a sparkler and a small flag in the same hand in a "show of patriotism" which "accidentally" set the flag on fire.

11. I know, but the fundies would have a cow, if they were watching
BUT I am sure there was no danger of that.

15. They once forgot to bleep the word "shit" when Jon said it...
and the next day Jon said they didn't get a single complaint.

So yeah, they don't watch it.

It would bring the curve down on their demographic anyway.

2. Seen US flag burning on the news in Iraq.. but never in this country.
It's just another bull shit wedge issue to get people to vote against their best interests and shoot theirself in the foot.

6. We need to figure a way to make a "permenantly burning flag"
Maybe something like an alcohol lamp with the flag acting as the wick.

7. It's hot if people are talking about it.
Republicans are talking about it, whether or not it actually happens or whether or not a law makes a difference.

Why do republicans talk about something so insignificant? Because it is insignificant, that is, it can't hurt them if if fucks up (Iraq) or if some few people go to jail for it (Padilla).

8. A few years ago, I read that there had been seven; but of course
that didn't include all those burned, as is legally mandated, when they are worn, faded, torn, or in some way dishonored (as in being autographed by Dubya.)

If the righties get their way, I guess we'll surreptitiously throw them in the garbage can when we're finished with them. Who would want to take the risk of burning one in the time-honored way of disposing of it respectfully?

9. Isn't this also a First Amendment Issue? If we don't like people
doing this and ban it, what will we ban next?

13. Save the flags but let the country go to hell in a hand basket
Another wedge issue to take our minds of DSM and the Bush war crimes (all the way back to poppy Bush).

16. Not enough unfortunetly
I've seen many flags that need to be burned. But no they are flying all tattered from their poles. Still up in the rain, still up at night when no light is shining on them.

Why do Repugs hate America?

19. Do they introduce this amendment every Congress?
In order to make the Dems argue in favor of flag burning?

How often do Repubs put forth amendments with purely political goals, not to actually get something real done? I'm sitting here wondering that.

20. the repubs are pushing this out of self preservation
since they have claimed the flag as their own and wrapped themselves in it. they may not get the anti-burning issue passed, so they will concentrate on making a law that requires that all flags be flame retardant.

22. Add a "no Creationism or prayer in school" Amendment to it, and I'm for it
Sounds like a fair trade to me if the same amendment bans prayer in schools, the 10 commandments in government buildings, and creationism/intelligent design in our schools, and guaranteeing the right to abortion.
