I did.
I was in such a miserable mood, I figured I couldn't sink any lower.
Oh, was I wrong. I was SO wrong.
She's an attention junkie. Fake sob in her voice, just like Susan Smith when imploring the kidnapper to return her two kids she knew she'd already killed.
She's smart, calculating, giving nothing away. At this point, I see nothing but a malignantly narcissistic personality, basking in what she's achieved. Her sly, eyes-to-the-right confession that she'd wanted to commit suicide "since birth" left me walking out of the room, loudly announcing that she'd made the wrong choice.
She needs to get that thyroid problem handled properly, too.
Katie Couric's about the worst interviewer I've ever seen, although Diane Sawyer is still Queen Of The Drivel.
Do you think anyone will ever buy a book she and that goofball fiance of hers write?

but my wife wanted to watch it so I started reading. It did not take long for me to start responding openly at the self-serving, manipulative drivel coming from this irresponsible individual. And Katie's role in this "feel sorry for me" performance was equally disgusting. In the first place, this interview was not news or worth the country's time. Secondly, I asked myself what has become of our culture that sees this as worthy of public discourse.

Although, it shouldn't really surprise me... America is the only country in the world where Paris Hilton can have an illustrious career by having to do nothing other than travel through the birth canal. What do we expect when 41% of the country still approves of George Bush and thinks that the unhealthy part of a double bacon cheese burger is the bun.

I had no desire to revisit that bullshit ever again.
I don't care, I have no sympathy for it, I didn't want to lend my watching it in ratings .. which only lead to supporting this drama bullshit stories the media thinks they can get away with. I want real news! Not two fucked up people in crisis. Don't sell me fluff shit, people won't care about in 6 hrs. I don't want continuous 24/7 eyes on Peterson case, MJ, OJ, Ryder, Runaway Bride.
Tell me what's going on in Iraq. Tell me both sides of the stories there. Tell me the stories of Iraqis trying to survive on their way to work or school. Tell me why we aren't outraged over the Bullshit of this administration. Why aren't people storming the WH for answers. Why are American families starving, why are they homeless, where is the sympathy for that. I can rage on and on, but Runaway Bride pfffffffft a bit shallow in the scope of real news not being told by Corporate Media(MSM)

Maybe it is just me--but if I was having a mental health crisis, and trying to resolve a relationship with my significant other--- there is no way in hell I would be doing an interview on national television. I'd want to be left alone and my privacy to be respected.
Then again, how much money for "the story" could prompt me to potentially make an ass out of myself in front of millions of viewers with nothing better to do than to watch a pathetic interview.
Either way, it kind of nauseates me. The stuff our media cares about.....

Yes. Bring her back. We need an outlet for the attention starved to air their freakishness... it would be a public service that keeps them in daytime TV (sandwiched between "The Peoples' Court" and old re-runs of "Saved by the Bell") where they belong!!

7. Didn't watch it, BUT.. she's not a "girl", she's a KOOK. |
|
The press has made her out to be this poor waif-ish, overwhelmed GIRL who just got so stressed that she bolted..
She's THIRTY-TWO....
She's from a family who has plenty of money, and could have HIRED people to attend to the details of her "wedgasm"
She surely could have taken vacation time from her "job"..(I forget what it is, but at the time, it struck me as a fairly menial position for someone planning a Princess Di wedding.)
She PLANNED the whole thing, so it was NOT a spur of the moment thing.
She tried to blame it on someone else (one of whom was dark-skinned), and sent police on a second wild goose chase.
and then there are the shoplifting issues.. She was TWENTY-SIX when she shoplifted for the THIRD time ($1700.00 if I recall).. If she had not been white and well-connected , she would be doing hard time..not planning ANY wedding)..
She's a pampered child of plenty, who had always had others clean up her messes, and she deserves no smypathy..
(when I was 32, I had a husband, 3 kids..one handicapped..had moved 5 times in 4 years to 5 states..dragging kids and pets in tow...and we had very little money...don't TELL me about stress)

That's why I thibnk she is seriously psychologically ill.. Any 'normal' person would have known that every setail from their past would be dredged up, and how embarrassing some of those things would be..to themselves and their family..
I guess the prospect of big-buck from a tv show and book trumps shame:(

and I can't understand why the media is treating her with kid gloves.
Here is a 32 year old woman who basically sets up this whole scheme to "run away" and then when she is caught she has no remorse or shame and now she is trying to peddle a story and a movie???
...and no one is taking her to task for this???
meanwhile here in pittsburgh a 16 year old gal got involved with a guy over the internet...he crosses state lines to take her back to maryland (or virigina..I forget) and it becomes a huge case as this guy is looking to torture this gal.... and when the rescue her a local media whore calls her everything but a slut for "luring" the crazy man to her...no one seemed to give a shit that she was only 16 and probably way out of her depths.... nope... but this 32 year old screwball runs away and she is getting a movie????

There is no shame anymore. It's been eliminated. Man, are you that out of touch that you didn't even know that?
There is no shame because everyone has a reason for doing what they did, and it's always a good and justifiable reason, because they say so and we listen.
No one objects.
Listen to the way "apologies" sound now (save for Dick Durbin, the weasel):
"Mistakes were made." A powerfully slick use of the passive voice without any indication that the speaker has done anything untoward.
"I am sorry that you took it that way." The speaker's not sorry for anything, honey, just that you opened up your trap about whatever the hell he or she did or said.
"I apologize for the way things turned out." Again, no personal involvement, no personal culpability, and, more than anything, no apology.
Here's what an apology sounds like: "I'm sorry. I did that and it was wrong and I should have known better and I'll do everything I can to make things better and I'll never do it again, and I am very, very sorry."
Oh, shit. Now I'm in an even worse mood ............

40. The only thing you've got wrong, IMO, |
|
is the flavor and nature of your judgment. She's a very sick person (and, yeah, so is he). I guess the part I find objection to is in bold:
She's a pampered child of plenty, who had always had others clean up her messes, and she deserves no smypathy..
She needs some very serious therapy. Do you have sympathy for someone who, for example, has PTSD and needs serious therapy? She's not a lot different, except for the diagnosis.
She also needs to be held accountable for her actions, I would agree (and Gwinnett County is trying to do that, altho not as vigorously as I might have liked), and the thought that she will benefit from a book deal chaps my hide as well.
But in reality, she is one fucked up human being and as awful as they can be sometimes, I still somehow do -- and want to continue to -- find a small piece of sympathy in my heart for them. I just don't think they came into the world this way or that it's their inherent nature, ya know?

49. Here's some relevant news from IMDB: |
|
Former CNN Bureau Chief Reveals Why She Quit
CNN's former bureau chief in Beijing and Tokyo has acknowledged that she resigned from the cable news network because she "had been growing increasingly frustrated with the direction CNN was going in."
In an interview appearing in the current Columbia Journalism Review, Rebecca MacKinnon remarked that she had become aware of a trend toward "less interest in serious news and ... towards more infotainment, from anything but a war zone." She said that as "neither a war correspondent nor an infotainment news bunny," she was forced to reexamine her place at the network, especially after being told things by her superiors like, "Your expertise is getting in the way of doing the kind of stories we want to see on CNN" and "We'd like you to cover the region more like a tourist."
MacKinnon said that when she came to the network in 1992, when it was still owned by Ted Turner, it placed heavy emphasis on international stories. "There was this real feeling that if a story mattered, we should cover it. If you had a strong argument to that effect and you could pitch that to Ted Turner, the funds would be there, because he viewed CNN as something other than a product that you just sell on the market for profit maximization. He saw it as something more socially significant than that." All that, she said, changed after the merger with Time Warner, when the attitude became, "if you couldn't justify high ratings with a story, increasingly, they didn't want to spend money on it. Of course, it's hard to know in advance sometimes."

50. How do I become a media star? It seems so easy for these people. |
|
Ideally, I'd have to be a shapely, pretty blonde or brunette (with dimples, if possible) for the media to give a shit.
I just need to do something outrageous, nefarious. Something involving lying about minorities doing something bad to me. Something having to do with sex -- something that would get someone in my life considered "a person of interest" (I'm a little ticked off at my brother; maybe I'll pin whatever it is on HIM).
Lessee ... blow job to a president? Uh, it's been done (and I wouldn't want my mouth within several states of Dubya's privates!). Uh ... running out on my wedding? Been done. Arranging for my figure-skating rival to get kneecapped? DAMN! That's been done, too.
*Sigh* Hey, DU-ers! Help me figure out how to become an infamous, 15-minute media darling!
