Bankrupt Winn-Dixie to Cut 22,000 Jobs

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050621/ap_on_bi_ge/winn_dixie_bankruptcy;_ylt=AstGs7NxJV5RbLXSssVyVUVI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

Bankrupt supermarket chain Winn-Dixie said Tuesday it will cut 22,000 jobs, or 28 percent of its work force, as it shutters 326 stores in an attempt to emerge from bankruptcy.

The company is closing 35 percent of its outlets under a proposed Chapter 11 reorganization plan. An additional 500 workers will lose their jobs at its Jacksonville headquarters.

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. will cease operations in four states — Tennessee, Virginia and North and South Carolina — and trim businesses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. It will exit the Atlanta market.

The company said it will try to sell six dairy plants, its pizza plant in Montgomery, Ala., and its Chek Beverage/Deep South Products plant in Fitzgerald, Ga., which produces Chek soda, shelf-stable juices and condiments. If buyers are not found, the company said it would continue to operate the Chek Beverage plant and its dairies in Hammond, La., and Plant City, Fla.

Higher prices, less jobs. We need a Democrat in the White house.

4. I know that I should feel bad for the employees, but I don't really.
There's a Winn Dixie approx. 6 city blocks from where I live so needless to say my family is in and out of there a lot. The manager is a kool-aid swilling Bush**bot. When I was in the store wearing any of my DU shirts, a Dem party shirt or donkey pin, most of the personnel was downright hostile. Perhaps they'll begin to rethink their Bush**/GOP love thing.

6. Not to defend Bush's economy, but Winn-Dixie is a crap supermarket chain.

When we lived in Miami, the two big players were Publix and Winn-Dixie. Publix stores were spacious, clean, well-lit, newer and had lower prices. Winn-Dixie stores were smaller, dingy, expensive, and unsanitary. (One time I found a frozen dinner, fully thawed, in a grocery aisle. Instead of throwing it away, they PUT IT BACK IN THE FREEZER.) Oh, and many of the checkers at Winn-Dixie in Miami spoke NO ENGLISH WHATSOEVER.

It's a clear case of Winn-Dixie not being competitive, IMO.

Birds of a feather if you will.

11. Also,most Winn-Dixies are not yet in competition with the Grocery Walmarts
In Miami, we only had one Wal-Mart, and they only had milk and cereal, a few other things, not a full grocery store.

There was also one Sam's Club in town, abut I don't think most people would drive clear across a huge city like Miami to shop there.

Both of the Publix stores in my neighborhood were constantly packed, and another one was being built. Publix is not a Wal-Mart-style joint either. They just seem to have their shit together a lot better than Winn-Dixie.

Over here in San Francisco, they have Safeway and Albertson's. It's amazing how similar they are to the Florida scenario. The Albertson's stores are newer, cleaner and nicer (they're not cheap, but all supermarkets in the Bay Area are obscenely expensive)

Then the Safeways are all small, dingy and even MORE expensive than other markets.

I've had to start getting most of my food at Smart & Final and the Chinese grocery here, the supermarkets are so high.

12. Walmarts here are the super stores.
They have put other grocery stores out of business. Jitney Jungles, Krogers and now Winn Dixie. Of course, Krogers put the A&Ps out of business.

We have small, locally owned stores that I shop at, but I am not certain about certain items, so I do end up at Walmart. When that is all there is you have to shop there.
