H.J.RES.10 (flag burning amendment) - how did YOUR Representative vote?
77 Dems voted "nay", 12 Rethugs vote "yae" (they will be dealt with later). Go to the site to see which members crossed party lines. Not doing that again, as last time I put that much effort into this kind of a post it was lifeted by another forum WITHOUT CITING DU AS THE SOURCE as their own work; it then appeared in another DU forum, citing the plagerizer!

Wes Cooley's shoes are damned hard to fill.

I'm sure Wes is somewhere out there working with "Special Forces, Korea" protecting some alfalfa field and plotting his next secret mission while collecting his wife's, er, domestic partner's husband's veterans benefits. After all, he's a Phi Beta Kappa.

WOW...Kucinich switched positions to a No vote....YAY! I am so glad he
finally switched on this, too.

I always UNDERSTOOD why he used to vote with the GOP on abortion and flag-burning, especially considering his district, but I always WISHED he'd align with the other progressives on these votes.

Now, he's switched on both, and my decades of faith in him are truly rewarded.

20. I am with you
This was the one issue I was never hesitant to vocally and vehemently disagree with DK. I am happy that he has concluded what the rest of us have: Flag-burning is hardly epidemic, the Constitution should not be amended lightly and for political expedience, and if a country's supposed symbol of freedom is truly such, it can withstand its own desecration as an expression of free speech, no matter how uncreative or distasteful some may find that expression.

She's terrific!

And preventing flag-burning will help the nation...how? Hey, if someone has one of the magnetized flags on their car, and I hit it in an accident, is that flag-desecration? Or is it desecration only if their car catches on fire? Stupid, stupid politicians. :dunce:

I wonder how anyone who says he switches his vote for "political expedience", when opposing this amendment is highly unpopular in his district and across America in general, can maintain a straight face now when letting that accusation fly.

38. What the hell does it MEAN? hello?
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 12:57 AM by TaleWgnDg
.
What the hell does it mean? hello? This is what passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, the proposed new amendment to our federal constitution:

"Not inconsistent with the first article of amendment to this Constitution, the Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."

Ummmmm, as a lawyer, I say that this proposed amendment grants broad discretionary power to any U.S. Congress! Too broad. Much too broad. For example, what does the word "flag" mean? Anything congress wants it to mean. How about the lynchpin word "desecration?" Again, that word means anything that any congress wants it to mean.

Holy cripes!

You know that T-shirt you own with the U.S. flag on it? Some day down-the-road an over-zealous congress could have you arrested for wearing it. How about a bikini with the U.S. flag imprinted upon it? Bikers love to air-brush the U.S. flag upon their motorcycles. Can they? How about if you own a blanket with a flag imprinted on it, can you lie upon it in your own backyard? In your house? Can your dog? And, the list goes on and on.

How stupid can it get? This is why the U.S. Supreme Court has said that certain acts done to the U.S. flag are allowable u/ the Freedom of Speech of our constitution's first amendment. Get the government the hell off our backs! Why amendment it?

.

39. My letter to my congressman
In regards to your signature on the flag desecration amendment. I surely hope that you do not limit the desecration to that of only burning flags, since not only is it a form of protest but also proper disposal of a retired flag. A good source to reference in determining the specifics is to look at the flag code. http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html#5
Section 8 concerns respect for the flag, and how better to respect the flag than to put this code into enforcible law. I couldn't help but notice that your own website was in violation of this code. Specifically the 'Support the Troops' banner emblazons this text on the flag (See Sec. 8.g). Before supporting legislation concerning flag desecration, please ensure that you show the flag proper respect. Thank you.

Matt
