The US has said that the recently crashed U2 plane was spying on the Taliban in Afghanistan. With all the talk about war with Iran, could this plane really have been conducting pre-war operations?

I'd bet dollars to donuts this poor bastard was doing recon over Iran. Putin at one point, I remember, had publicly announced to the press that "ufo's" seen over Iran's nuclear facilities would be shot down.

No link. Just a clear memory because the use of the term "ufo" as a probable veiled reference to American reconnaissance aircraft was so remarkable.
