Together, HERE is the ticket to stopping flag desecration amendment!!!
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 04:21 PM by yankeefanatic3
"Just One Senator" to save the first amendment -- Could it be? Yes.

Conservative leadership claims they are within 1 or 2 votes of passing the "flag desecration" amendment in the US Senate. It was passed today in the US House -- if the Senate passes it, the states get it for ratification.

There IS a sure fire way to stop this, in my opinion -- and I'm starting the campaign today by notifying every liberal blog I can think of to spread the word...

But I can't do it without your help!

U.S Senator Mark Dayton of Minnesota, my Senator, one of the most liberal members of the Senate, indicated before that he would support an amendment to the Constitution to stop "flag desecration." I'm confident we can stop him from doing this!!

In order to have a successful lobby campaign, EVERYONE who reads this (*especially Minnesota constituents*) must do the following:

1) E-mail Senator Dayton and tell him to vote AGAINST the "Flag Desecration Amendment," remind him that if he votes for it that he is HELPING the REPUBLICAN agenda. If you are a constituent, remind him of such -- talk about how important civil liberties are to you and how he has stood up for them before. The link to email him is http://dayton.senate.gov/contact/email.cfm

2) Call Senator Dayton's Washington DC office TOLL FREE at 1-888-224-9043 and tell him the exact same thing.

3) Spread this message and word to as many people as you humanly possibly can until your heart dries out.

4) More: Perhaps a lobby campaign can be scheduled in some of his MN offices or his DC office? Respond about this please!

Of course, repeat the same for YOUR Senators as well!

This is an issue that I am really passionate about. Stopping the Republican leaders from deriding the 1st amendment is important, but stopping LIBERALS from helping them is even more. Good luck! And anyone who has more ideas please let me know. We must defeat this!

1. Let it go on for a bit.
Anybody who thinks about it for a bit will realize how unamerican the whole thing is. It makes the Republicans look bad.

2. They are shameless bastards!
"Ask the men and women who stood on top of the (World) Trade Center," said Rep. Randy (Duke) Cunningham, R-Calif. "Ask them and they will tell you: pass this amendment."

Can you believe this shit? We should DEMAND AN APOLOGY!

peace.

(Second and more minorly, to nitpick, they can't talk because they are dead.)

3. Just Wrote Sen. Dayton
Here's what I told him:

The most important right guaranteed to the citizens of the United States by the Constitution is the Freedom of Speech. Today, the Republicans are trying to strangle that freedom by wrapping themselves in the flag. Their latest tactic is this so-called "Flag Desecration Amendment" which is no less than an un-American attack on our First Amendment rights. Do not become party to the Republican agenda--do not let those who would destroy the Bill of Rights claim to be "patriots".

While I and many others would never dream of desecrating the flag because we love our country, we see this issue as a direct assault on the liberties upon which this country was founded. Therefore, we see this amendment as wholly un-American and un-patriotic.

As a member of the Senate, Mr. Dayton, you must give voice to those of us who love the Bill of Rights just the way they are. Please stop this travesty from taking place. Please vote "No" on this freedom-hating "Flag Desecration Amendment" and preserve the vision of our Founding Fathers.

4. Great letter
Does this mean that George Bush won't be able to desecrate the flag as a campaign stunt anymore? I remember him scribbling on American flags during the campaign, and not a word about how he desectrated it from the 'patriots' on the right!

I would support a bill that called for no desecrating the Constitution. The flag is merely a symbol, the Consititution is the foundation on which the principles which make this country what it is supposed to be, is built.

This bill desecrates the Constitution's 1st Amendment. It should be labeled the 'Anti-Constitution Bill' ~ and no true patriot should consider signing it.
