The more I see and listen to John Edwards........ |
|
the more I like the guy. He's articulate and has the type of personality that should bode well for him over the long haul.
I felt he was dead on the other day on "Face The Nation" and he gave a speech this past summer at Georgetown that was the best one this year from all the candidates.
If he doesn't get the Prez nomination, I think whomever does should pick him up for VP
Just for the record, I'm still a Kucinich guy, but Edwards has undeniable political skills.

5. I am glad you are seeing and hearing Edwards |
|
because we sure don't hear anything from the media about Edwards around here.
The last time there was a story about Edwards in the local press was when he denounced legacy admissions.

I love it when he brings that up. That's the kind of thing that will make rural people, particularly white male rural people, stop in their tracks and take a different look at affirmative action. And then he follows it up with being for knocking walls down for everybody. It's great and I think very effective. I definitely want John Edwards on the ticket, top or bottom.

7. there is much to like, IMO |
|
I like his background, I like his gentle manner, I like that he announced on the Daily Show! He seems like such a regular person. I didn't expect to like him- thought he was just another pretty face- but then I heard him speak a couple of months ago and did some reading up, and I was pleasantly surprised. He's solid- and I am surprised that he has not done terribly well so far,but,- early days yet!

One word: Charisma.
He's fabulous. But I don't think he could win the presidency-- make a beautiful VP though.

10. Edwards is great on domestic issues |
|
...but on foreign policy he is an inexperienced. The VP can play a critical role on national security matters particularly by keeping the pentagon and intelligence agencies in line. I would vote for him anyway, he's no dummy. He could learn on the job with the right advisers.

...that this is still his first term, and back then, he may have still been considering running for re-election to the Senate. But as a person, I like him, and despite some saying he's a "DLC boy", he sure seems to have a stick to smack against corporate hegemony. I think if he doesn't get the nomination, he should find his way into the Attorney General spot. I think he'd do a great job there, and it would keep him "visible" for a possible future run.

15. I suppose it's possible that he doesn't LIKE the Senate. |
|
Especially when the Dems are in the minority. He seems like a very dynamic person to me, and is probably used to having things his way, and also likely has a very low boredom threshold. Maybe the daily grind of the Senate, plus endless fundraising just didn't do it for him -- it sounds glamorous, but I bet it really isn't.

25. Care to unscramble that one for me? |
|
He's in your top three, but you wouldn't vote for him for president? Hopefully there's someone in your top three for whom you would vote.
If he's nominated will you stamp off in a huff or throw your vote away on someone who also didn't cast a Congressional vote against the damned thing?
If he's nominated and it looks like a close-run affair and you can't suck it up to vote for him, will you please at least by quiet about it? You shouldn't have to hold your tongue for long; the neo-cons' karmageddon will probably torch the lot of us shortly thereafter.

16. I Like John Edwards Alot |
|
My three favorites are Edwards, Kerry, and Clark in no particular order but I give a slight edge to Clark on electability....
The stakes are so high in this election that I feel my vote is like a surgeon's knife.... There is no room for error...
Different candidates do better or worse in different political environments....
I agree with Al Hunt... Al Hunt is a uber insider but he's also a reliable liberal... Al and his wife, Judy Woodruff introduced Edwards to all the Washington movers and shakers last year but even he was forced to concede on Capital Gang that it's hard to construct a scenario where Edwards can win in a post 9-11 environment....
If Edwards is the VP on anybody's ticket he's poised to be the front runner in 08 if the ticket loses and 12 if the ticket wins....

17. I really like him too |
|
But he does have an annoying verbal tic of going AAAh while he's thinking what to say.
Nevertheless, I would LOVE to see him use his trial lawyer skills going after the BFEE and their assorted interests.
If he doesn't make Pres or VP, I think he needs either a big cabinet post or some high profile public service type job to keep in the spotlight for the future, rather than going back to private practice.

26. Is "that lawyer thing" a problem for YOU or an assumption |
|
of the distaste of others? Seriously, this isn't a snotty question; it follows along the general line of thought that the right has successfully poisoned us against many things like the term "liberal" and the idea of "unions" and such.
Lawyers aren't actually as universally despised as those with wealth and privilege would have us all believe. This is actually an achilles' heel for them too: they believe their own propaganda to such a degree that they can spit the word all day long, and many people will not be affected by it at all.
So, do you personally dislike lawyers, consider this to be a liability in the eyes of others or some combination of the two? If a combination, then roughly what percentage?
I think he stands in far better stead than many believe on this issue, especially when the specifics of his cases are examined. When they try to tar his ilk with the escalation of malpractice insurance, it needs to be said that the insurers have used this to cover their speculative losses in the market.
Hope I'm not being too combative about this, but I'm curious. Glad you like him; he's a good guy.
