When's the last time a flag was burned in the US, anyway?
Seriously. I cannot remember any instance of a US flag being burned in the US for the past 20 years or so. Middle East? Asia? Latin America? Sure, I remember news photos--but even then the "flag" being burned was clearly felt-tip marker taken to white cloth.

Anyone?

1. This month I think
I think there was an incident sometime this month by an Islamic group burning a flag in NY to protest the Quran desicration.

3. Interesting.
You'd figure the fascists would be screaming about it as a prime example.

'Course, that means they'd have to bring up Gitmo...

2. In the next 7 days I predict there will be 10 flag burnings.
Threaten to remove a right and people will start exercising it.

Human nature...

16. That was exactly my thought...
It's never occurred to me to burn a flag before, but I'm feeling feisty...

6. I was taught as a kid that to properly dispose of an American Flag
was to burn it. I'm sure if you check a VFW site, you'll find that's still the recommendation. I don't understand what the deal is with this proposal at all!

7. This is one I will never forget
We do not need this law. The heroes among us can take care of it.

"In 1976, baseball player Rick Monday stopped a flag burning during a game in Los Angeles. Rather than stand around waiting for somebody to pass a law or amend the Constitution, Monday simply snatched the flag from the desecrators. Rick Monday proved you don't need the government or a law to do the right thing."

9. The last time there was a flag burning in the US was
Tuesday. On the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

As for disposal of the flag.

The federal flag code can be found below

And the pertinent section to this discussion.

k) The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

12. In Miami in 2000, after the rescue of Elian Gonzales
from his crazy relatives, a bunch of Cuban Americans went on a rioting rampage. I saw footage of some of them burning American flags on TV, although I think they didn't show it too many times since those people are dear to the Repiggies.

I found it a disgusting display, but I still think that it's a form of expression that should not be limited except by fire codes.

13. If they bring back the draft there will be a lot of flag burning
Maybe they are getting ready for mass protest demonstrations that could produce flag burning. Forward thinking.

25. Bingo!
I believe the last time flag burning was popular in the U.S. was during the Vietnam war demonstrations. They could very well be getting set up for a draft and the demonstrations that will follow.

14. If a jerk burns a flag
"If a jerk burns a flag, America is not threatened. If a
jerk burns a flag, democracy is not under siege. If a
jerk burns a flag, freedom is not at risk and we are
not threatened.  My colleagues, we are offended; and
to change our Constitution because someone offends
us is, in itself, unconscionable,"
-- Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-New York)

15. Tomorrow, my front yard---you coming?
We must stamp out this rampant flag buring----

I keep thinking of Bartlett on the West Wing talking about this very subject, and he wonders if there has been a recent spate of flag burning that he was unaware of.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION, UNDER CANADA AND ABOVE MEXICO, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

shit I'll torch up a few flags, I think I have a Soviet one someplace, and a Union Jack--- Marshmallows and all-- wheeeeeeeeee

Preferably on your nearest conservative neighbor's doorstep.

Seriously, this is ridiculous! Who the hell burns flags anymore? I thought that went out in the '60s. It's such a cliche.

On edit: I'd rather burn photos of Smirky.

23. About 20 years ago during the Raygun admin
I was at a demonstration and I saw a flag burned, many of the protesters tried to stop the perps from burning it but it got burned anyway. I have to admit that up till then I didn't know now how I would feel but I was surprised seeing it burning actually repulsed me and gave me a sick feeling. :-(

24. it'll be like their actions to prevent abortion
by limiting birth control... it just causes a jump in abortions during *'s presidency. Making flag burning illegal will prompt many people to test the system to become political martyrs.
