Woman Fired From Job For Taking Time Off To Spend With Husband On Leave
From Iraq

A Jessamine County woman is looking for work after being forced to make a tough decision - take two days to spend time with her husband on leave from Iraq, or lose her job.

<snip>

Shirley said she wanted to take a week off at work while her husband was home. She felt since she had worked there since around the day the company opened ten years ago she could get the time off. But she was told she had used all her allotted vacation and sick time and had to work while David was in town. Blankenship also said she was on a warning for excessive absences - time she says was used over the last few years to care for her epileptic son, Austin.

If you would like to contact them and let them know how you feel about this woman's treatment, here is their info:

1. So, you want DUers to jump all over this company after hearing one side
of the situation?

3. Did you actually read my statement? It said, "IF you would like
to contact the company..." That is not a directive. There is a difference between providing info and instructing people to do something. Hope that clarifies what my post.

4. I did read your post. "IF you would like" is followed by
"let them know how you feel about this woman's treatment, here is their info:"

I doubt anyone on this board knows how to "feel" about this woman's "treatment."

Personally, I worked with a woman who used every excuse in the book to be late, or not be there....every single story was sad, scary, had to do with family...etc. Chances are, this company just got fed up as hell with her, and finally said, "that's it."

Chances are they are just assholes. If she is in the right, then she has a legal leg to stand on, and I hope she goes after them.

8. I guess you don't have children or for that matter one who
has a disability. I have one with Chron's and I take a lot of time off because of Dr's appts. and blood work that has to be done. She does have one with a disability. She also stated in the article she was willing to work a double shift so she could be with her husband. Someone like that proves to me she is a reliable person, or she wouldn't have been there for 10 years. They must have thought an awful lot of her.

10. There is nothing in that article that "proves" one side of this story or
another.

I am sure it is difficult having a child with disabilities, particularly in this horrible climate.

5. The company refused to comment, so how do you get the other side?
From the article:

LEX 18 called McClane Cumberland Wednesday to ask them about the decision. They refused to comment, saying it was a personnel matter.

9. If the company has reasons that were not revealed....
It needs to reveal them.

6. I just e-mailed the president of the company
mary.piekarski@mclaneco.com about how mad I was about this treatment. Let's all do the same thing. Word of mouth travels fast and their profits could suffer if she doesn't hire Shirley back and make a public apology.
