The "invitation" from the White House to co-chair was simply a blind junk-mail solicitation from the Republicans that seemingly went to everyone, regardless of their political affiliation (I received the same one at my home address, despite the fact that I'm a Libertarian), in an attempt to lighten a few extra wallets in the working class. Interestingly, according to http://vote2003.ss.ca.gov/Returns/summary.html Mary Carey ran as an Independent (an Independent who humorously criticized many Republican positions, no less), and not a Republican, in the 2003 California Recall Election. It's tempting to suspect that Mary's sudden willingness to throw in with the Reps has more to do with not winning this year's Best Overall Marketing Campaign - Individual Title or Series Award (as she did in 2004 thanks, in part, for her role in the Recall Election), than with any serious retooling of her emerging political philosophy. But hey, does a desire to put popularity before principle really make her any different from the rest of Washington?
