Byrd was NOT a "KKK wizard". He was a mbr of the klan as a young man in his early 20s, for ONE YEAR. He entered it as his father was a mbr before him, as were many men in his town at the time (1930s).

I do not want to minimize the very serious error he made in joining one of the most despicable groups our country has ever seen, but I don't want his brief tenure there to be inflated to a level it never was - simply to denigrate a man of conscience who took that brief experience and made life-altering changes because of it. Republicans have been using this against him for 60 yrs now.

tried to write down when Byrd was speaking: The witnesses get all the time they want. The Senators don't get the time. I watch you with a considerable amount of amusement. I have seen a lot of different Secretaries of Defense. I don't think I have ever heard a Secretary of Defense who liked to lecture the Committee as much as you do.

Re lecturing the Senators: Nobody questions the ability of our soldiers, nobody. We know that. This Administration and you make mistakes, but for you to come up here and lecture the Committee ... Rumsfield comes up here and gives the Senators a sneer. How do you answer a sneer. Who can answer a sneer.

We represent the people. The Constitution says "We the People". I have had my fill of this Administration forgetting the Constitution. We are three separate, but EQUAL, branches. The Administration forgets that the Legislative Branch is the first one mentioned in the Constitution.

We didn't ask enough questions before this war. We talk for the people. The PRESS didn't ask enough questions. We didn't ask enough questions, whether you like it or not. I'm ashamed of my own great Body here that didn't ask enough questions.

The American people have not heard enough of the truth. I have just had enough of your smart answers up here. Get off your high horse when you come up here. I have to run for re-election. You don't.

I asked what this war would cost. I get a sneer back.

Byrd then asked about the supplementals for the war and why they did it the way they did. Rumsfield answerd: That is not exactly the truth. Senator Byrd said "Is that your answer???" Rumsfield said "Yes, Sir".

that's the way *WE* do it. He wasn't talking historically at all because he couldn't, wouldn't dare challenge Byrd's historical memory. Byrd would have thrown down the gauntlet and gone justifiably enraged at Rummy, more than he was if possible.

Byrd spoke the truth to Rummy. I would like to see it happen more often ... daily ... hourly ... added to the loop tape of Christina that they played for the *detainees* at Gitmo and pipe it into his head through his teeth.
