Bush doesn't look bored, he looks drunk.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 08:34 PM by LittleDannySlowhorse
NOTE: This thread used to be called "Is there a 12-step group in the house?"

A lot of people have been wondering how our beloved president could have delivered such a spectacularly shitty speech today at the UN. Surely even he, with his limited mental capacity, must have appreciated that it was pretty important to ingratiate himself with the General Assembly, or else the good people of the United States would get stuck with the entire tab for rebuilding Iraq and keeping a military presence there, a revelation which has sent his poll numbers into free-fall. With this in mind, I humbly posit the following question:

Has Bush started drinking again?

One person noticed that his hands were shaking this morning. Was this simply nerves or was it the drunken tremors? And who could forget this recent photo of our beloved commander-in-chief trying to exit his limo:

So what do you guys think? Discuss.

1. Sure...I'm a 12 stepper, but
we must always keep in mind that some people can not be helped. The
three most important qualifications for following a 12 step program are honesty, honesty and honesty. Sorry, I would not even attempt his case.

2. One thing Bush could never do...
... is admit that he's powerless over his addictions. He could never make amends. I'm not familiar with all the steps, but I know the ones that I do know are surely physically impossible for him.

Actually, what are the 12 steps? It would be fun to go through them and see if there's even one that he could master.

9. Thank you!
I only joined yesterday, but already I can feel the despair of the last three years starting to slip away. It's good to be here.

7. I'll try
l. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe a power greater than ourselves could resstore us to sanity

3. Made a decision to turn our lives over to the care of God as we understand him

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves

5.Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character

7. Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all

9. Made direct amends whereever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and medititation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for his will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awaking as a result of these steps we tried to carry the message to other alcoholics and practice these principals in all our affairs.

Decide for your which Bush could do. I don't even think he can do step 1.

Then Bush probably couldn't handle it.

4. When he REALLY looked drunk was the night of August 14,
The East Coast power blackout. THAT was somebody who had to be sobered up to get in front of the cameras! If you didn't see him that night, you really missed it. I have not seen even ONE replay of that video (somedy PLEASE tell me it exists somewhere).

As to the twiddling of the fingers, that's a manifestation of sheer nervousness, of being uncomfortable with one's immediate surroundings; I have the symptoms myself. It's also been postulated in another thread that it's a side effect of lithium (been there, done that, so it could also be true).

8. I missed that!
I live in NYC so I couldn't see him on TV that day, obviously, but I wish I had. But who knows? Maybe there will be many opportunities in the next year to see him implode, and who knows? Maybe they will add fuel to the fire. If he did his state of the union speech drunk, for example, the "electability" of our candidates would cease to be an issue pretty quick.

I saw it once or twice online before it disappeared. Keep in mind that Bush was not scheduled to make any kind of public appearance that day, AND that he made his speech hours afterwards--just like on 9/11!

Well it was a Thursday and all my friends who do a lot of bar-hopping say that "Thursday is the new Friday." Did President Shitstain give his speech in a Hawaiian shirt, draped in Mardi Gras beads? Was he yelling "Free Bird!"

10. Good Point.
As they say in AA, Step #1 is the only one you have to do perfectly. The others you practice. And Step #1 has to do with honesty. If you don't have that one down, you might as well forget about the others.

I have read lots of people posting here that they're sure GW has gone back to drinking. If that's true (I'm still not sure about it - you can usually tell by looking at the eyes - they get really dull when they relapse) we can all be sure of one thing

he will start a very quick and obvious decline. We'll start to see it in more & more of his speeches. He'll start to slur, we'll see more photos of him dropping his dog, his hair will be frizzy, he'll have this occasional goofy look on his face when he's "feeling no pain".

We'll see...

PS Welcome, LDShorse! Isn't this a great place? I used to be furious about the news. Now, I get to do something about it.

11. Thanks, cliss
Yep, there's no way in hell he could master step one. He probably thinks he mastered step three, though.

That's funny that other people have been saying he may have started drinking again. I don't really drink so I'm not too well-acquainted with the tell-tale signs, but there have been a couple of moments over the last couple of weeks (like that picture I pasted into the body of my original message, and when he dropped his fucking dog) where something has definitely seemed amiss. Of course, the guy is such a dumb-ass that it may just be his usual blunted state of mind, but I like to keep an open mind about these things. Shit, for all the evil things he's done since he took office, it wouldn't surprise me if he needed to abuse some kind of substance to eradicate whatever scintilla of a conscience he might still have left.

Thanks for the warm welcome, by the way. I only joined yesterday but so far it's been really great. I've met all kinds of cool people and, as you said, I feel like I can watch the news again and only become completely enraged as opposed to completely suicidal.

So you around the boards!
