Karl Rove on Maple Street (Keith Olbermann)

NEW YORK — In the ravings of Karl Rove against liberals (and the ravings of liberals against Karl Rove), I am reminded of yet another in my endless supply of pop culture references: The Twilight Zone episode called "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street."

As political allegory, it was pretty simple, but also very effective.

Something, or someone, starts screwing with the lights and the electricity on an ordinary suburban street. Within minutes, the residents have concluded that aliens from outer space have invaded. As alliances and rivalries dissolve and re-form with incredible swiftness, these neighbors accuse each other of collusion with the invaders. One of them finally starts shooting. The director pulls back to a nearby hill, where sit two real aliens, one of whom sagely reminds the other that there's no need to actually attack any of these stupid humans — you can just scare them a little bit and then wait for them to tear themselves apart.

Think of how we responded — politically — to 9/11. First there was overwhelming non-partisanship. Years of deteriorating relations between the parties vanished; were even apologized for. And within three years the Republicans were insisting that a Democratic presidential victory would mean more terrorist attacks. This year our "leaders" started the Nazi references — Senator Byrd first, Senator Santorum next, most recently Senator Durbin.

And last night, Karl Rove slimed Durbin (and, of the Nazism invokers, only Durbin) and uttered the unforgettable line: "Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."

Two minor points. First, Rove's name goes on the list. I suggested here yesterday that if you start talking about the other party the way politicians did just before the Civil War, you're out. Senator Byrd? Retire. Senator Santorum? Quit please. Senator Durbin? The analogy was far too over the line to get back. Resign.

I don't have MSNBC and i don't see anything about it on his blog.

2. "Monsters on Maple Street",
indeed! Only I don't think the Dems(mostly anyway)are the Monsters.

Talking Points Memo had something I liked about this..

"The president and his partner are more concerned with going to war with half the country than they are with war against the country's enemies abroad. Until the president thinks differently on that key point there's simply no point in dealing with him on anything."

4. Sounds like Keith is trying to take a roll of peace maker.

He sees the final outcome of this, if it continues. And I agree with the outcome. It is the making peace with the neocon slime I can stomach. How can you possibly work with anyone that stabs you in the back time and time again. And about the nazi thing, well Rush has been using it in his 'act' for years, no one called that over the top. But if someone uses it against Darth Dubyious, then we all have to stop. Even though what is going on here looks a lot like what went on during the Nazi rise to power. When that term is used it is not in reference to what they did at the end of the war, but in how they became the evil power they were.

6. The "peacemaker" thing seems accurate.
And he had a trenchant point with the Civil War reference, even if it was a little over the top.

I think he almost hit the mark with his blog entry, but I'm perhaps too partisan to properly judge.

And Karl? Start Roving.

Why was Keith vague about what Santorum & Rove should do? "Quit" what? Santorum should quit making Nazi comparisons or quit his sorry government service? As for Karl, I hope he meant "start roving" out of his sorry, despicable government service as well.

Keith was more definitive when it came to what he thought Senators Byrd & Durbin should do.

Sorry, Keith. Senators Byrd & Durbin were just telling it like it is. If you can't see the correlations between the Nazis & this administration, perhaps you should resign.

7. Getting a wee bit too much hate mail lately, Keith?

Time to suck up to the corporate powers that be because right wing nuts are sending inflammatory comments?

I can tell from his little rant that his major was definitely not history. If it was, he's forgotten everything he ever learned.

Fascism, Keith, it's what's for dinner.
