CBC slamming * proposed dept of education funding
CSPAN now.

Mel Watt is manageing and many members of the CBC are taking 1 minute to ask unanimous consent to extend and revise their remarks. I'll post the transcript tomorrow.

1. Why is it...
that the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and the BBC have to do all the hard-hitting journalims about our government? It's a sad, sorry state of affairs with U.S. media.

3. CBC = Congressional Black Caucus (in this context)

4. I think the poster meant Congressional Black Caucus not Canadian...
Broadcasting Corp. Points out why I wish people here would use fewer acronyms or at least spell them out once in a post. I read dozens of posts with obscure acronyms that someone seems to think everyone knows, and I often have no idea what they're saying.

5. Thank you...
Here in Michigan, the first connotation of CBC is Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

7. Congressional Black Conference
Sorry, I assumed when I said that Mel Watt (chair) was managing the debate, all would know.

2. Once again, they cannot agree to fund the disabled in education
robbing Peter to pay Paul. Taking funds from OSHA and other places to reach 20%. Still 20% short on the commitment Congress made in the early 90's to fund Special Ed. services. IDEA mandated funding. NCLB mandated funding. Where is it all going? Who knows?

Regula (R) from Ohio objecting to meeting the 20% level by taking money frm OSHA.

6. That's great!
I'm the director of financial aid at a LIBERAL arts college, and the proposed "funding" is a joke. The Federal Perkins Loan program (used to be National Defense Student Loan and National Direct Student Loan in decades past) is on the chopping block. *'s proposal is to recall the Federal share of these loans and offset the deficit in the Federal Pell Grant Program. It's indeed robbing Peter to pay Paul. Although the Perkins represents less than 10% of the nation's education loan volume, it's a critical piece of funding that will mean that many students may leave school. Perkins has a generous cancellation program for military, law enforcement, and teaching service, and there would be many fewer students choosing to go into these professions without it. It's shortsighted and narrow-minded proposal. What happens later on down the road when there's a critical shortage of teachers and military personnel and law enforcement personnel....WAIT... isn't that already happening?

Just my 2 cents' worth.

9. Thanks! Glad to be here. ;)
I'm so incredibly sick of the neocons, and it's good to be here with like-minded people. :)
