Is it any flag that looks American? Can I burn a flag that only has 48 stars?

If I buy my own flag can congress keep me from doing whatever I want with it? That doesn't seem very capitalist.

Can I make a paper flag and burn that? In fact if I make my own flag with the sole intent of destroying it then would it really be the "American" flag, would it?

How about a confederate flag, I can poop on that right?

Can I deface the flags of the individual states? Like the Texas flag? I know that their National Gaurd never fought to protect nothin' so I wouldn't be insultiing any troops in wrapping fish with that flag.

I think that what we should obviously do is choose one specific flag and protect it with all we have. Just the one official flag. All the others would be copies. In fact there could be an official license with a copyright and everything, think of the marketing revenue.

Cause what they are talking about now is just plain silly. All I would hae to do to be legal is burn a flag that looks suspiciously like the US flag but isn't, like one that only has 12 white stripes or 49 stars.

Maybe they haven't thought too hard about this.

No, they'll send you to Gitmo for doing that to THEIR flag.

3. I think flag burners should resolve only to burn Confederate flags
from now on. That will REALLY piss off the wingnuts, and make a mockery of the Repugs pushing the ammendment in the first place!

7. I have the same type of questions, but what was passed is NOT
a flag burning amendment! It is a one sentence transfer of the power to Congress to somehow prevent the desecration of the flag.

8. It was an amendment giving Congress the authority to restrict political sp
eech...

in this specific case, burning a flag which is obviously political expression or people wouldn't know what you meant every time you did it.

Anyone notice that all footage of flag burning in these cable stories is from another country? Are we suppossed to invade them and arrest those guys?

11. The only thing that I see that passed was H.J. Resolution 10 which
reads:

`The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.'.
Passed the House of Representatives June 22, 2005.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.j.res.00010:

I agree that it's a power grab and my question is how do you ratify an amendment that doesn't say anything! Where is the definition of what the hell a 'flag' is? What must it be made out of? If someone throws away one of those paper flags on a toothpick stuck to a cupcake, do they go to jail?

The whole thing is stupid and came from the superpatriot, Rep. Duke Cunningham, who has the morals of a Tom Delay!

9. did you hear the Congressman who proposed the amendment
refer to the flag as "a sacred symbol of our freedom".

"Sacred Symbol" sounds like he is trying to establish a religion worshipping the flag.

That's bound to be breaking at least 2 commandments, if not 3.

10. IIRC, flag burning did not become a part of american protests
until the height of protests against the VN war.

I've not heard of a single flag burning in the US since then.

If they are pushing for this now, how much worse are they expecting things to get?

13. that's not why they are pushing it... there is very little they can
push right now that is "popular" with the public and buys a little of the lost political capital back. This is an old standby (worked for Poppy) that gets the "base" whipped back into place.

12. If you burn a flag make sure that there is
right winger wrapping themselves in it making a speech about how bad liberals are. Burning the flag may be a crime, but burning the right winger is ok.
