New Videos and Torture Photo's --- Distraction To Be ====> Rehnquist Quits
This weekend is the announcement:

Book it... the WH is already interviewing the "short list"

and this "suffocate all other stories"... it's already planned.

(IMHO)

17. WashingtonPost.com already announced it, then retracted.
But it will all wait until next weekend, I think (7:20 July 1) as people relax for a long weekend.

18. Really?
They retracted it??

Katharine Graham spins silently at a thousand miles per hour in her grave.

Yeah, I forgot about next weekend. I'll bet you a pitcher of beer (see below) you're right.

And, your avatar is absolutely the BEST one I've seen on DU. I'm madly jealous.:woohoo: :applause: :woohoo: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :woohoo:

2. Agree, it makes eminent sense
They need something big enough to waylay whatever MSM that might, otherwise, actually cover the torture evidence.

3. thought the ACLU
said they would be out around the middle of July. Have they upped the date? I am not looking forward to viewing those pictures but I have to say that they are going to have an effect on people's opinion.

If the torture pics and photos are as devastaing as advertised, the distraction may not last, however.

11. I would accuse US troops of that.
We know they did it.

We saw pictures of US troops raping, torturing, and murdering people.

Time to take the blinders off people.

13. Pictures are far more powerful
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 04:47 PM by cynatnite
While Rehnquist will be major news...it's the pics that'll overshadow. Those are the kinds of things most people will won't forget.

The attempt to use the resignation to divert attention will be there, but I think it'll fail.

On edit: The pictures may wind up get more people pushing to get the troops out of Iraq.

14. Are the pictures to be released to the ACLU or directly to the

public? The reason I ask is that if the pics go to the ACLU, they can have some control on the best news cycle to release them whereas if the order is to release the photos to the public there is NO question it will happen with a suitably big diversion such as you have put forward.

Edited to add: I found the answer to my question. The judge's order is to have them released to the ACLU, according to a Washington Post article at the time:

"Judge Alvin Hellerstein, finding the public has a right to see the pictures, told the government Thursday he will sign an order requiring it to release them to the American Civil Liberties Union, the lawyers said."

I don't have the WP link, I found the quote on Kos:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/27/115214/962

I hope the release of the photos and videos are solely up to the ACLU and the bush cabal can't release them publicly simultaneously with the release to the ACLU.

15. Then the photos shouldn't be released until the Rehnquist distraction
dies down. The release of those photos/videos needs to be a surprise attack. Don't tell ANYONE when they will be released. That way the cabal can't create a distraction.

On second thought....

they probably have a ton of crap to throw out anyway . A terrorist attack? A dirty bomb alert? A new Color code warning? Terri Schiavo isn't really gone? Bin Laden is cornered and will be caught any minute now? Cheney's pace maker had a short? It's time for Saddam's trial? They OWN the media and will use it any way they see fit to bury the Abu Ghraib pics.

She only has three clerks so far for this year. Speculation is that she will pick up one of Rehnquist's.

25. BushCos entire program is NOTHING BUT distractions . . .
virtually everything they do and every proclamation they make is intended to divert attention from the crimes they are committing daily . . . the question isn't "What's the next distraction going to be?" . . . the question is "What is today's BushCo announcement distracting us from?" . . .
